Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
Ground Source Heat Pumps are designed to provide up to 100% of a property’s central heating and hot water demands by using electricity to convert the heat energy stored in the ground to heat water.
why have a ground source heat pump?
- Ground source heat pumps can be used in some properties as a cost effective alternative to oil, LPG, gas or electrical heating systems.
- They are classed as renewable because they generate up to 5 times more heat than the electrical energy they consume.
- You may be eligible for RHI payments, effectively making the installation cost significantly lower than a new Gas, LPG or Oil boiler installation and providing both central heating and hot water for your home.
- Ground Source Heat Pumps can be installed onto existing radiator systems. The typical cost for the installation and commissioning of a Ground Source Heat Pump in a 3-4 bedroom house is between £10,000 and £15,000.
- Heat Pumps are a tried and tested technology having been used in Europe for many years, and more recently throughout the UK.
Ground Source Heat Pumps are more expensive than Air Source Heat Pumps due to the need for ground works to bury the heat collection pipework. The heat collection pipework is buried around the property either horizontally or vertically at a depth where temperatures are at an almost constant 10°C all year round. If specified and installed correctly, Ground Source Heat pumps provide a very efficient source of inexhaustible low-cost heat energy all year round.
Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) `GRANT`
The domestic RHI is based upon the amount of renewable heat generated by your Ground Source Heat Pump. It runs for 7 years and will rise annually in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI).
At current rates an average GSHP installation will attract quarterly, tax free, index-linked RHI payments of around £440 (over £12,000 over 7 years).
