Hydro-Probe - Model SE - High Temperature Microwave Digital Sensor
From Sensor - Liquids
The Hydro-Probe SE is a high temperature microwave sensor designed for use in liquids such as concentrates, solutions or any process where the level of moisture or dissolved solids requires measurement. The Hydro-Probe SE may be used to help control quality and reduce waste when manufacturing powdered products such as dried soups, powdered drinks, paints or pharmaceutical powders ahead of spray drying.

Overview
The sensor is manufactured from materials that are safe for food contact enabling installation in food production or similar environments. The Hydro-Probe SE can be used to measure in an evaporator when reducing liquids to determine when a target level has been reached. This enables precise timing for the liquid to be discharged. The sensor may also be used in any process where an exact measurement of moisture in a liquid is required.
Designed for installation in a pressurised environment, the sensor is positioned so that the material flows around the sensing head and measurements are taken 25 times per second. The sensor rapidly detects changes in moisture levels enabling real time adjustments to be made during processing. This ensures that the manufacturer is able to produce a consistent product which is always maintained to an optimum condition for the next stage of the process. Knowing the correct amount of moisture in the product improves quality and reduces the amount of downtime required, for example, to clean spray driers that become blocked by an incorrect material consistency.
The Hydro-Probe SE incorporates the unique Hydronix digital measurement technique for extreme precision and also provides a choice of measurement modes, allowing the user to select the most appropriate mode based on the material being measured. The sensor is also equipped with on-board functionality such as configurable digital inputs and outputs, signal smoothing, batch averaging and high and low moisture alarms. This versatile moisture sensor may be used as a stand-alone unit with a display such as the Hydro-View, or easily integrated with a third party automation system using the analogue and digital communications.

The Hydro-Probe SE is a digital moisture sensor that is designed to measure moisture continuously in a liquid material as it flows around the ceramic sensor faceplate. Reading at 25 times per second the sensor detects rapid changes in moisture, providing a linear digital or analogue output.
Digital technology provides precise, linear moisture measurement.
Advanced Digital Signal ProcessingThe sensor response may be adjusted remotely using the Hydro-Com software to minimise the effects of noise of the measured signal. Advanced Digital Signal Processing provides a clear signal with a rapid response.
Measurement ModesChoice of measurement modes for optimising sensor performance in a variety of applications and material types.
Fully Temperature Compensated MeasurementThe sensor internally adjusts for mechanical changes due to temperature fluctuations
Easy to InterfaceTwo analogue outputs and digital RS485 communications and configurable digital inputs / output make the sensor simple to integrate into a control system.
Measuring in the MixMeasuring at 25 times per second the sensor continuously detects changes in the moisture of the materials throughout processing.
Temperature MeasurementTemperature output is available to provide a readout of material temperature.
The Hydro-Probe SE can be mounted into either a pressurised vessel or pipeline where the material can flow around the sensing head. Installation is simple using the bolted flange on the Hydro-Probe SE.
Accuracy of MeasurementAll measurements may, if required, be calibrated to an accuracy of +/- 0.2%.
Sensor ConfigurationThe Hydro-Probe SE can be remotely configured using Hydro-Com diagnostic software. All readings and sensor parameters are available including the type of output and filtering characteristics.
CalibrationThe sensor may be internally calibrated using the Hydro-Com software, or the linear output may be calibrated within the control system or by use of the Hydronix Hydro-View calibration unit.
Simple Power RequirementsThe Hydro-Mix may be powered from a 15-30V dc supply. Multiple sensors may be driven from a single power source.

Connections
The Hydro-Probe SE microwave moisture sensor has a built-in choice of connection options using either analogue or serial. The RS485 serial interface allows up to 16 sensors to connect directly to a control system via a serial communications link. There are 2 analogue outputs which can be configured to 4-20mA, 0-20mA (0-10V), 1 configurable digital input and 1 configurable digital input / output. These different options provide flexibility to select the most suitable method of connecting to their control system.
There are various options for interfacing between the sensor and the control system using a Hydronix approved Ethernet, USB or RS232/RS485 adapter. Alternatively, the Hydro-View moisture display can be used to provide real time on-line process measurements including both moisture and temperature. In it's simplest configuration the analogue output from the Hydro-Mix can be connected to a Scaleable Current Loop Display to display the current moisture.
Cabling
Cabling
Hydronix supplies various cable lengths incorporating the required 10 way MIL-SPEC connector. This enables the sensor signal to be sent to a Control System or PC for configuration and calibration.
Recommended field cabling:
- Six pairs twisted (12 cores total) screened (shielded) cable with 22 AWG, 0.35mm2 conductors
- Screen (shield): Braid with 65% minimum coverage plus aluminium/polyester foil
- Recommended cable types: Belden 8306, Alpha 6373
- Maximum cable run: 100m, separate to any heavy equipment power cables
Installation and Mounting
The Hydro-Probe SE microwave moisture sensor has been designed for use in higher temperature environments or to be installed into a pressurised vessel.
The Hydro-Probe SE measures the material passing in front of the ceramic faceplate. It should be mounted so that the moving stream of material passes across the ceramic faceplate of the sensor and away from areas of extreme turbulance, and is typically installed in the side of a vessel or pipeline. Installation is simple requiring a hole to cut into the side of the vessel and a mounting boss pressure welded to it. The Hydro-Probe SE is then secured using a gasket and the built-in flange creating a presure tight seal. Hydronix always recommends that because of the high pressure nature of the containers that any work undertaken to the vessel is carried out within manufacturers guidelines.
The examples below show diagrams of typical mounting for the Hydro-Probe SE in a pressurised vessel and in a pipline.
Full details regarding installation and calibration can be found in the User Guide. This is available for download in many different languages. Details for the Hydro-Probe SE accessories can be found on the associated products page.
