Operation
Material is fed into the conveyor through several inlets or one long hopper inlet and generally is discharged through one outlet. As the material to be conveyed enters the conveyor, it falls through the upper run of chain onto the lower run of chain. In the lower chain run, the material is transferred towards the drive section where it is discharged down, usually to another conveyor or into a mix tank
Features
The conveyor casing is of gas tight welded steel plate construction. A drag chain is installed inside the casing to serve as the material conveying element, taking its drive from a roller chain and sprockets, which are driven by an electric motor and gear reducer. The roller chaindrive incorporates a shear pin, which is sized to break if the equipment becomes overloaded.
Tension of the drag chain is adjustable by moving the sliding take-up shaft assembly at the take-up end of the conveyor. A zero speed detection device is fitted to the sliding take-up shaft assembly to monitor the running of the take-up shaft, and to alarm and/or stop the conveyor if the take-up shaft stops rotating, or its number of rpm drops below a preset value. Inspection doors are fitted to the top of the drive and take-up sections of the conveyor
Benefits
Drag chain conveyors of 'en masse' type provide an efficient and economical means of handling pulverized, granular and dusty materials. One of the benefits of this type of conveyor is its flexible construction: it is well adapted to horizontal and inclined layouts, or to any combination.
Application
Typical uses are found in various industrial processes: Drag Chain Conveyors are used for receiving and transferring raw materials to intermediate holding bins, for feeding from holding bins to processing equipment, and for transferring end products into storage.
Drag Chain Conveyors are ideal for handling materials involving heavy dust problems, e.g. for collecting fly ash and flue dust from below electrostatic precipitators and cyclone separators, and for the further transfer to holding bins. Conveyors of normal design can be used when the temperature of the material being handled is below 180 degrees Fahrenheit. For higher temperatures, we have developed special chains of heat-resistant steel qualities.
Sizing
Sizing Drag Chain Conveyors is like sizing any other conveyor, based on the customer's requirements. Some things to consider are the quantity of material to be conveyed over time, the density and typeof material to be conveyed and surroundings and conditions where the material is going to be conveyed.
Based on the above criteria and after applying the proper safety factors and calculations, the proper size conveyors for the job can be determined.
