Leading Edge - Model LE-v150 - Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
From Leading Edge - Wind Turbines
The LE-v150 is a compact, silent and lightweight vertical axis wind turbine designed to provide power outputs pf up to 200 watts for a host of different battery charging applications. For use in applications where a traditional horizontal axis turbine may be inappropriate and simply couldn’t survive prolonged periods of storm force winds, the LE-v150 draws on our heritage of designing rugged vertical axis wind turbine chargers for powering industrial and research equipment in extreme environments. Read the case study of LE-v150s powering a weather station and video cameras on a buoy 8.5 km offshore the Romanian coast.
Product Details
It can be found all over the world powering small electronic systems in remote places where there is no other power source; it is a great companion to Solar PV in ‘off-grid’ renewable energy systems and powering security cameras or telemetry instrumentation.
However, the LE-v150 also lends itself perfectly for leisure activities in the Marine sector. The LE-v150 wind turbine provides a strong marine battery charger and is perfect for providing charge into valuable batteries whilst owners are away. The LE-v150 is available as a 12V, 24V and 48V DC wind turbine.
- Silent Operation – absolutely no noise as the turbine operates
- Small Compact size – this vertical axis wind turbine is easy to install in places where space is a premium
- Lightweight – at only 13Kg the LE-v150 wind turbine can be installed with ease
- Safe – the rotating blades cannot cause injury
- Reliable – with only one moving set of parts and no brushes to wear out
- Rugged – LE-v150 Extreme is designed to survive 80mph winds
- Easy mounting - Extruded aluminium spine and ruggedised brackets for mounting on 50mm OD pole
For harsh locations where wind gusts can reach 27m/s (60mph) or temperatures drop down to -40degC, the LE-v150 Extreme turbine is available. It features enhancements that reduce the stress and fatigue on the blades during prolonged periods of storm force winds. The overall turbine RPM is reduced while maintaining the same power output as the standard LE-v150. In sub-zero temperatures, the black body absorbs UV light to help prevent ice build up while the low-temperature bearings mean the turbine continues generating power at temperatures down to -40 degC. Indestructible build quality & durability
The LE-v150 wind turbine is manufactured from high quality aluminium alloys and stainless steel which has been laser processed, CNC machined, hard anodized and powder coated to ensure that the wind turbine will withstand the harsh effects of the extreme environments that it was originally designed for. With only 1 moving part, there is little to go wrong and no brushes or slip-rings to wear out and need replacing. The sealed bearings are fully lubricated, so no greasing or maintenance is required. All of the fixings are manufactured from A4 stainless steel which are able to withstand the most corrosive of environments.
The LE-v150 is precision engineered in the UK with only one moving part so little maintenance is required during the turbine’s long operating life.
Pure performance
The LE-v150 wind turbine uses a proven ‘Savonious’ rotor design which gives silent and effective performance. Using the latest solid modelling and Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations, we have come up with an elegant ‘cross-ventilated’ rotor which provides extremely good power conversion for a vertical axis wind turbine of this size. The rotor is then coupled to our specially designed low inertia, zero ‘cogging’ axial flux permanent magnet alternator to ensure an excellent power curve whilst the turbine starts up in winds of 4m/s. Using Neodymium rare earth magnets, this alternator design has become one of the most field proven and effective alternators that is deployed across the entire range of Leading Edge Turbines!
Absolute safety
Unlike any other small wind turbine you will find, the LE-v150 can even be allowed to run ‘off-load’ with no connection to the batteries – The LE-v150′s rotor design will limit is RPM automatically. You can even try to put your hand into the spinning rotor, but it will be deflected away before any harm is done! These safety features make the wind turbine ideal for installation in places where space might be an issue, and where people are nearby – providing the perfect marine battery charger on the deck of a sailing boat!
Protecting your batteries from over-charging
To protect the batteries from over-charging, a charge controller configured to 'diversion' mode is connected to your battery bank. It operates as an 'overflow' for the battery bank – bleeding excess energy to a dump load when the batteries are full. This means that the turbine is always running – and not being switched on and off as is the case with other charge control methods. See 'Related products' below.
