Mecan-Hydro - Fixed Wheel Gate (Roller gate)
From Gates & Operating Systems - Gates
Roller gates are typically used for Gravity/Emergency closure and where waterways are too large to efficiently use slide gates. The rollers (wheels) are mounted on shafts fixed laterally to the leaf on vertical girders have double functions: reduce the friction forces and transmit the water load to the embedded parts. Upstream sealing is preferred to reduce downpull loads, to permit venting through the roller gate upstream gap and to facilitate access to penstocks and tunnels. Downstream sealing uses the water loads to compress the joints and enhance sealing.
Application
- Intake gate *Guard gate capable of gravity closing under full range of flows. *Act as a secondary device for shutting off the flow of water in case of the primary closure device becomes inoperable (Emergency Gravity closure requirement). *Allow turbines to be isolated from upstream side for shutdown & maintenance purposes.
- Sluice gate Used to regulate and modulate flow on power plants.
- Spillway gate Used to regulate flow of water released from reservoirs
- Draft tube gate Allows turbines to be isolated from downstream side for shutdown and maintenance purposes.
Pro s
- Gravity closure
- Distribution of gate water load
- Reduced friction forces and lifting capacity
- Operating mechanism provides effort only when raised (single action)
- Easy operation under unbalanced heads
Con s
- Requirement of gate guides (slots)
- Possibility of trash stuck on rollers
- Load points transmitted to vertical guides and concrete
- Higher manufacturing and installation costs
