Static VAR Compensator (SVC)
From Smart Grid & Grid Quality
A Static VAr Compensator (or SVC) is an electrical device for providing fast-acting reactive power on high-voltage electricity transmission networks. SVCs are part of the Flexible AC transmission system device family (FACTS), regulating voltage and stabilizing the system. We provide a complete turnkey delivery of the project including civil works. Furthermore, we can also provide consultancy support for the assessment of the SVC specification.

Static VAr Compensators can be used as High Voltage Boosters (HVB) for various applications:
- Voltage stabilization on existing lines.
- Extensions of existing lines where the SVC device can support voltages at the end of the branch without the need for a new costly feeder station.
- Major reinforcement of an existing electrification.
- New electrification where the route passes through a long section with no economically viable connections to the 3-phase supply system.
- Mitigate harmonics on the line produced by trains and improve power quality.
- Economical savings as the SVC can maintain the power factor control at unity, no penalties for reactive power consumption and more efficient use of substation equipment.
The SVC can also be used as Load Balancer to compensate the negative phase sequence (NPS) caused by the unbalanced load (catenary). The filter circuit of the SVC system is designed to absorb harmonics generated by trains as well as by Thyristor Controlled Reactors (TCR). The total harmonic distortion (THD) and individual harmonic voltages are limited.
Due to increase of wind energy, the Transmission System Operators (TSO) put grid code requirements on the wind parks to ensure grid stability such as reactive power control and ride-through capability. A centrally placed SVC at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) can be used to solve these issues in wind farms and have the following benefits:
- Voltage Stabilization
- Fault Ride Through (FRT)
- Reactive Power Balance
- Flicker Reduction
