Industrially generated biogas is a source of energy created from several types of organic materials by anaerobic fermentation. This process, also known as anaerobic digestion, is undertaken through microbial consortia under specific conditions. The resulting gas is composed of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and traces of other gases amongst them hydrogen sulphide (H2S).
During the anaerobic fermentation process, a nutrient-rich digestate (N, P, K, Ca, etc.) is also generated, along with organic material with a lower odour index and whose basic use is agricultural - as an organic mineral fertiliser for agricultural crops.
Biogas is used as renewable fuel, an alternative to the current dependency on fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and carbon.
