Handling waste in urban areas is coming under scrutiny in many countries.
There are many common causes for this including:
- Existing landfills in many communities are filling up and new landfills or other options are needed to manage waste streams
- Space for new landfills is becoming more and more difficult to find, leading to the necessity for much greater rates of recycling and reuse for waste products
- Increasing energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions is leading to a requirement for energy efficiency and greenhouse gas neutral energy
- Goals of greater sustainability mean communities are mandating greater reuse and recovery of resources from waste streams
Managing Liquid Waste
Co-digestion is the feeding of high strength liquid wastes directly to anaerobic digesters to generate energy – biogas – and process otherwise difficult to treat waste streams. It has two benefits: energy is saved by diverting waste streams out of the liquid treatment process; and energy is produced by the rapid conversion of wastes in existing anaerobic sludge digesters.
We can also help you plan and implement waste solutions that use High Solids Anaerobic Digestion (HSAD) for treating organic wastes–particularly food. HSAD is a new technology developed and commercialized in Europe, mainly seen in Germany.
Managing Food Waste
HSAD is great for processing food waste as very little pre-processing of the waste stream is required. Energy needed to operate the HSAD process is low and the leftover organic material is high in nutrients and composts easily. HSAD is quickly becoming the process of choice to process food waste and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste.
Managing Municipal Wastewater
Municipal wastewater contains large amounts of heat that can be extracted using heat pumps and distributed to residential or commercial customers for use as a heating or cooling source depending on the season. District Energy Systems (DES) are used to distribute heat to customers. DES can be high temperature or low depending on the heat source and customers’ heating and cooling needs.
