Rangeland Restoration
From Conservation Biomass
One of The Earth Partners LP’s primary land management and bioenergy development projects involves the removal of encroaching woody brush on rangelands in New Mexico, Texas and elsewhere in the Southwestern US. The program brings unwanted brush on private lands under long-term easement contract for the large-scale production of wood chips and wood pellets for renewable energy applications domestically and overseas. With nearly one million acres of land under contract, The Earth Partners has a five-person team in Texas and New Mexico working to develop brush management strategies that help accomplish the management objectives of landowners.

Historically, prairies and savannahs covered this ...
Historically, prairies and savannahs covered this area, providing important habitat and hunting grounds. Over the past century, with intensive livestock overgrazing and reduction in wildfire as a tool to maintain the grasslands, over 300 million acres have been overrun with woody brush far exceeding historic ranges and densities. Management of woody plants such as juniper, mesquite and huisache has become an important step in rehabilitating the mosaic landscape of grassland and savannah that is critical for a diverse, healthy, productive ecosystem. Removing the invasive brush in a sustainable way carries many benefits:
- Reduction in catastrophic wildfire risk
- Increased forage productivity for livestock
- Improved plant diversity and wildlife habitat
- Improved water retention and quality
- Improved hunting and recreation value
- Soil carbon accruals
- Real estate value maintenance
- Rural economic development, including jobs and improved livelihoods
While there are hundreds of millions of acres of this brush-infested land, only certain areas can be harvested and transported at a competitive cost. The Earth Partners has carefully screened these areas to identify such economically feasible “collection zones” taking into account brush density, accessibility, property size, and proximity to transportation infrastructure.
