Lost Circulation - Lost circulation during drillin...
Lost Circulation - Lost circulation during drilling and completion of geothermal wells can be a severe problem, particularly in highly fractured formations, and continues to be the most unpredictable cause of cost overruns in geothermal drilling. Customized preventative measures can be taken to minimize and eliminate lost circulation including additives to drilling fluids, cementing and completion solutions.
Over-Pressured Drilling - When over-pressure conditions are present it is imperative to avoid the uncontrolled flow of steam or hot fluids. Good well control practice is the best management approach employed to contain the resource, maintain control of the well and continue drilling in the face of over-pressured conditions. GRGI handles well control on a regular basis in areas where overpressure is encountered, and has also been called in many times to handle well control situations during the course of drilling.
Under-Balanced Drilling - A method of drilling where the well bore pressure is kept lower than the formation pressure using light weight drilling fluids, air or aerated mud, that helps to reduce the loss circulation problems, increase rate of penetration, prevent differential sticking and reduce formation damage.
Foam Cementing - Foamed cement is a mixture of cement slurry, foaming agents, and a gas (nitrogen), which results in a low-density cement matrix with low permeability and strength comparable to conventional cements. Because of these properties, foam cement can help to cure lost circulation and enable successful cementing of wells in highly permeable reservoirs. Foamed cement can also eliminate the need for liner-tieback or two-stage cement jobs, saving the operator costly rig time.
Fishing - Similar to stuck pipe, avoidance is the best way to handle a fishing situation. Fishing, the process of removing equipment that has become stuck or lost in the wellbore, is a complex operation. The key elements of a successful fishing operation include an understanding of the wellbore conditions, the tools and techniques employed and the dimensions and nature of the equipment to be removed.
Workover - Production and injection wells occasionally require major repairs or modifications for the purpose of restoring, prolonging or enhancing flow capacity. Well workovers can include work such as liner and casing repair, fishing, well recompletions and reservoir stimulation.
Forked Well Completions - GRGI engineers have been involved with forked well completions since their implementation for geothermal use in the ‘70’s, and are considered industry leaders in this practice. When a completed well has substandard performance, it is possible to drill a second leg to increase resource production while maintaining the resource encountered in the initial completion. Known in the oil field as a multilateral completion, forked well geothermal completions require special adaptations as wellbore size and difficult formations encountered limit the use of off-the-shelf oil field technology. GRGI regularly and successfully addresses these challenges.
