- Version Pro - Microgrid Modling Software

1

The HOMER Pro microgrid software by HOMER Energy is the global standard for optimizing microgrid design in all sectors, from village power and island utilities to grid-connected campuses and military bases. Originally developed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and enhanced and distributed by HOMER Energy,

HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model for Multiple Energy Resources) nests three powerful tools in one software product, so that engineering and economics work side by side:

  1. Simulation: HOMER simulates the operation of a hybrid microgrid for an entire year, in time steps from one minute to one hour.
  2. Optimization: HOMER examines all possible combinations of system types in a single run, and then sorts the systems according to the optimization variable of choice.
  3. Sensitivity analysis: HOMER lets you ask as many “What if?” questions as you’d like, because you cannot control all aspects of a system, and you cannot know the importance of a particular variable or option without running hundreds or thousands of simulations and comparing the results. HOMER makes it easy to compare thousands of possibilities in a single run.

HOMER Energy introduced the HOMER Pro microgrid software product in 4th quarter of 2014, as a completely redesigned product with a new look and many new features. Our intention is to continually improve the product, with quarterly updates.

One of the most significant changes to the user experience over earlier versions is the addition of add-on modules. This feature accomplishes two important goals: (1) It allowed us to keep the price affordable and similar to HOMER 2, while greatly enhancing the product, and (2) it simplifies the interface — customers will not see features that they do not require.

Current add-on modules for HOMER Pro Microgrid Software:

  • Biomass : Biomass resource, bio-gas fuel, bio-gas and co-fired generator.
  • Hydro : Hydro component and hydro resource.
  • Combined Heat and Power : Thermal load, boiler, thermal load controller, and generator heat recovery ratio.
  • Advanced Load : Additional electric load and deferrable load (with storage capacity, peak, and minimum load ratio)..
  • Advanced Grid : Real time rates, time of use pricing, scheduled and random outages, purchase capacity, interconnction charge, standby charge, grid extension models, and demand charges.
  • Hydrogen : Includes the reformer, electrolyzer, hydrogen tank, and fuel cell (generator fueled by stored hydrogen) components, as well as the hydrogen load.

HOMER Pro Pricing

How much better would your sales be if you could show your customers how your technology fits into hybrid systems, and how your customers could save money with your technology?

These are just some of the ways you might benefit from HOMER software customization services to serve the renewable and off-grid power design and vendor community.

HOMER can be customized to meet your organization's needs with:

  • A custom interface or web application for your internal use or your company's marketing efforts
  • Adding your specific technology or brand into public versions of HOMER

We have created a variety of customized versions of HOMER and customized enhancements to the public version. Developers of innovative technologies have requested additional details in HOMER to reflect their needs. We have also created specialized interfaces for clients.

Examples include:

  • ZBB web-based sales and funnel tool: ZBB EnerSystem™ Sizing Application
  • Web-based HOMER interface for rural health clinics, supported by USAID (see http://tools.poweringhealth.org)
  • Plug-in electric vehicles
  • Dish-Stirling solar thermal power plants

Custom Interfaces or Web Applications
Custom HOMER interfaces gives your sales force the information they need to show customers the clear and compelling advantage of your product. You can focus on getting the financial and energy-saving numbers in front of your customers without the complexity of complex desktop versions of HOMER. Your own branding will demonstrate that your company has seriously invested in understanding the numbers and outcomes associated with your product. Email consulting@homerenergy.com today or call us at 720-565-4046 FREE to learn how to put the HOMER to use for you.

Add Your Brand or Technology to Public Versions of HOMER

Thousands of new users download and open HOMER every month. Are they seeing your brand or technology in the components list? You may be losing sales to a competitor, or simply being overlooked because HOMER users are not aware that your particular technology exists.

HOMER is the global standard in microgrid software, based on decades of listening to the needs of users around the world with experience in designing and deploying microgrids and distributed power systems that can include a combination of renewable power sources, storage, and fossil-based generation (either through a local generator or a power grid). The HOMER (Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources) model greatly simplifies the task of designing hybrid renewable microgrids, whether remote or attached to a larger grid. HOMER's optimization and sensitivity analysis algorithms allow you to evaluate the economic and technical feasibility of a large number of technology options and to account for variations in technology costs, electric load, and energy resource availability. Originally designed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for the village power program, HOMER is now licensed to HOMER Energy.

Simulation, Optimization, Sensitivity Analysis

HOMER microgrid software provides the detailed rigor of chronological simulation and optimization in a model that is relatively simple and easy to use. It is adaptable to a wide variety of projects. For a village or community-scale power system, HOMER can model both the technical and economic factors involved in the project. For larger systems, HOMER can provide an important overview that compares the cost and feasibility of different configurations, so that designers can use more specialized software to model technical performance.

HOMER is accessible to large set of users, including non-technical decision makers. Chronological simulation is essential for modeling variable resources, such as solar and wind power and for combined heat and power applications where the thermal load is variable. HOMER’s sensitivity analysis helps determine the potential impact of uncertain factors such as fuel prices or wind speed on a given system.

HOMER models both conventional and renewable energy technologies, either as a microgrid or as distributed generation within a larger grid:

Power sources:

  • solar photovoltaic (PV)
  • wind turbine
  • run-of-river hydro power
  • biomass power
  • generator: diesel, gasoline, biogas, alternative and custom fuels, cofired
  • electric utility grid
  • microturbine
  • fuel cell

Storage:

  • flywheels
  • battery bank
  • flow batteries
  • hydrogen
  • Loads:
  • daily profiles with seasonal variation
  • deferrable (water pumping, refrigeration)
  • thermal (space heating, crop drying)
  • efficiency measures
