Thermodynamic analysis of an air solar collector
The paper presents the experimental study of an air solar installation with a collecting area AC = 4.2m² and variable working fluid flow rate in the range 0.02÷0.06 kg/s. The experimental data are processed statistically through thermodynamic analysis, using energy (semi-empirical) and exergy methods. The aim of the paper is to establish the optimal air flow rate through this solar thermal system ...

Solarthermal parabolic trough power plants with integrated storage capacity
Parabolic trough power plants use concentrated direct insulation for steam generation in a Rankine cycle. The fundamentals for direct steam generation in parabolic troughs have been developed in recent years, the feasibility was successfully demonstrated at a solar powered test facility reaching steam temperatures of 400°C at a maximum pressure of 100 bar. Important components for the accelerated ...

High efficient utilisation of solar energy with newly developed parabolic trough collectors (SOLITEM PTC) for chilling and steam production in a hotel at the Mediterranean coast of Turkey
Parabolic trough collectors are getting introduced into application for solar process steam generation and high efficient solar chilling. SOLITEM GmbH in Aachen develops and produces its PTC 1800 for these applications. The first installation is made in the Iberotel Sarigermepark in Turkey. Energy supply facilitates, so that hotels and hospitals can economically be optimised by additional ...

Optimal environmental benefits of utilising alternative energy technologies in Jordan
With rapid population growth and increase in industrial activities, more energy is consumed, resulting in environmental pollution and economic difficulties. Therefore, the need for utilising renewable energy resources has emerged. Although Jordan does not have adequate fuel supplies (90% of its crude oil is imported), it is gifted with alternative resources. Because of the political and ...

Effect of window type, size and orientation on the total energy demand for a building in Indian climatic conditions
Windows in a building allow daylight to enter a building space but simultaneously they also result in heat gains and losses affecting energy balance. This requires an optimisation of window area from the point of view of total energy demand viz., for lighting and cooling/heating. This paper is devoted to this kind of study for Indian climatic conditions, which are characterised by six climatic ...

Energy and exergy efficiencies of a solar box-cooker
A simple and low-cost box-type solar cooker (SBC) was designed and tested. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the SBC were experimentally evaluated. The energy output of the SBC ranges from 2.1 to 61.7 kJ, whereas the exergy output ranges from 0.4 to 6.2 kJ during the same time interval. The average daily energy and exergy outputs of the SBC are 21.6 and 2.5 kJ, respectively. A linear ...

A novel underground solar thermal heat storage unit cum heat exchanger for non air-conditioned buildings
A novel passive space conditioning configuration is presented, integrating a Solar Collector System, Underground Storage Tank and Novel Heat Exchanger. This Underground Solar Thermal Heat Exchanger (USTHE) provided improved sensible heating/cooling of air by employing a Novel Heat Exchanger (NHX). The dynamic performance of the storage tank in USTHE is modelled using the finite difference method ...

The promotion and development of renewable energy technologies: current status and pattern of use in Nepal
This paper presents the current status and pattern of use of Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) in Nepal. The importance of the renewable energy development paradigm is considered in the overall context of national development by supplying the energy requirements of rural areas by the use of available biomass resources whilst also protecting the environment. The RETs popular in the rural energy ...

Meteorological pre-processing of incoming solar radiation and heat flux over a sparse boreal forest at a northern site during winter conditions
Measurements from Northern Finland on radiation and turbulent fluxes over a sparse boreal forest with snow-covered ground were analysed. The measurements represent harsh winter conditions characterised by low sun angles. The absorption of incoming solar radiation in clear skies (turbidity) was found to be a strong function of the solar elevation. At low solar elevation angles, commonly used ...

Women’s PV Workshop
On a clear, sunny day in March 2003, a group of women were outside a California environmental science school talking shop—and that isn’t short for shopping. Discussing everything from conduit bending to system voltage, these 25 women were at Walden West Center in Saratoga, California, installing a 1.5 KW solar-electric system. Walden West is an outdoor environmental science school in the ...
