Educator Trainings
REAP offers training to educators around the state to build up their understanding of energy literacy and hands-on lessons that can be used in the classroom to improve their students’ energy literacy. The trainings can range from a 30 minute workshop to a 2 day class with continuing education credits. These classes do NOT count toward a degree program, but do count towards recertification of teaching licenses and are provided for free except the cost of the credit through the university. REAP has funding to travel to hub communities to offer these classes outside of the railbelt as well.

Workshop/Webinar
The 30-minute workshop can be done in person or through a webinar, and focuses on AK EnergySmart curriculum, the free resource that teaches about energy sources and energy efficiency. To register for a webinar and learn more about the curriculum, check out the website here.
UAA class
ED 581: Energy Literacy in K-12 Classrooms
This course provides an overview of energy from gas, oil, diesel, wind, hydro, geo, solar, etc. It introduces the concepts of energy literacy and how they can be taught in K-12 classrooms using hands-on activities such as those from AK EnergySmart, Wind for Schools, NEED and other sources. This class typically meets in-person in a local community on a Friday night and all day Saturday with 2 distance classes later in the semester. Offered through the UAA PACE office.

UAF class
ED 593/4: Integrating Sustainable Energy in Secondary Classroom Curriculum
This class was held for the first time Spring 2017 and was completely distance delivered. Educators will learn how to integrate sustainable energy into the secondary classroom curriculum by using recordings from the Fall 2016 ENVI 120 (Home Energy Basics) class to present the material to their students. They will also engage their students in discussions, problem solving, and independent projects related to the ENVI 120 class. ENVI 120 covers basics of space heating and electricity use and production for Alaskan homes. Main topics include fundamentals of physics related to home energy, lighting and appliances, energy bills, building science, retrofits, and home renewable energy systems. Course emphasizes how to decrease fossil fuel consumption of homes. The high school students will have the option of taking ENVI 120 for credit, while the teachers guide the high schoolers through the class and identify Alaska Math and Science and Next Generation Science (NGS) standards correlated to the class.
