Alternative Energy: Small Molecule Semiconductor Materials to Improve the Luminous Efficiency of OLEDs
Small molecule semiconductor building blocks have special optoelectronic properties that are different from inorganic or polymer semiconductor materials. Compared with inorganic semiconductor materials, there are many types of small-molecule semiconductor materials, and there is a lot of room for the choice of material types. Secondly, molecular synthesis and modification can be used to achieve ...

Emerging policies for European energy
This paper gives an overview of the Conference on Emerging Policies for European Energy, convened by The Royal Institute of International Affairs in association with The British Institute of Energy Economy and the International Association for Energy Economics, London, 28-29 November 1994. Two opening sessions were mainly concerned with the context in which policies for European energy need to be ...

Experimental study of the effect of top-ring clearance volume on unburned hydrocarbon concentrations
The clearance volume between the piston, the cylinder and the top compression ring in an internal combustion engine has a significant effect on the unburned hydrocarbon concentration. The high heat transfer from the burning mixture to the cylinder surface extinguishes the flame front, and this is the main reason for increased unburned hydrocarbon concentrations. The heat transfer between the ...

The adoption and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies among firms
This paper discusses the adoption and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies among firms from a micro-economics perspective. First, some theoretical backgrounds are given on issues like the process of the development and adoption of environmentally friendly innovations, the adoption of new technology in a market equilibrium, and general market failures which influence the working of ...

Two-parameter formula for ground-band energy spectra of A = 120-200 mass region nuclei
This paper presents a two-parameter formula which works best for an Anharmonic Vibrator (AHV), i.e., soft and rigid rotor nuclei in the A = 120-200 mass region. A comparison with the other two-parameter formulae, i.e., ab, Brentano Soft Rotor Formula (SRF), Ejiri and Variable Moment of Inertia (VMI) model, shows that this formula gives a better fit with the experimental data. Keywords: power law, ...

The IAEA initiative on fast reactor data retrieval and knowledge preservation
The paper introduces the IAEA initiative on fast reactor data retrieval and knowledge preservation. Apart from giving the rationale for the initiative and describing it, the paper outlines the road map of the initiative and explains IAEA's role in its implementation. The status of the initiative is summarised, and a concrete work plan for the future activities proposed. Keywords: IAEA, nuclear ...

Assessment of the organisation's knowledge management maturity
Workforce ageing, the risk of losing accumulated knowledge and experience, reduced funding and other related issues have led to a reduction in technical innovation and a potential loss of technical competencies. This has focused the attention of all concerned parties on the need for effective strategies and policies for effective Knowledge Management (KM). This paper describes a common framework ...

GIVS: integrity validation for grid security
In recent years, grid computing has been recognised as the next step in the evolution of distributed systems. However, only limited efforts have been made to address the security issues involved in these architectures. Questions like 'What happens if a user of the grid is interested in making the overall computation fail?' are still unanswered. In this paper, we address the problem of granting ...

A North American definition for "green electricity": implications for sustainability
This paper investigates the potential implications, for sustainability, of a North American standard for "green electricity" (that is, electricity generated by environmentally-friendlier means). More specifically, four conceivable approaches to a North American standard are identified, namely, a continental standard with no local variation, a continental standard with ...

Out of the closet, into the open: professionalism, power and the personal in development
In development thinking and practice, normal professionalism, power and personal orientations are linked with a paradigm associated with things. Paradigm here refers to mutually reinforcing concepts, values, methods, behaviours, relationships and mindsets. A shift of balance is needed to a paradigm associated with people. The realities experienced by poor and marginalised people differ from those ...

Green Revolving Funds: An Annuity for Sustainabilty
According to a survey report by the Sustainable Endowments Institute, Green Revolving Funds (GRFs) have become more popular within the last two years across all sizes and types of learning institutions. All revolving loan funds operate on a fairly simple premise: An initial sum of money is set aside for the fund. The fund then finances sustainability projects that have a quantifiable monetary ...

Energy Efficiency and the rebound effect: Neither big nor bad
Now that you’ve installed efficient light bulbs in your house, do you think: “Guess I’ll leave my lights on all night. What the heck – it won’t cost me any extra.” Probably not. But some extreme critics of energy efficiency would have us believe this is the end result of appliance standards and energy savings technology – that we simply consume more ...

Back Cover: Early-Stage Capital Cost Estimation of Biorefinery Processes: A Comparative Study of Heuristic Techniques (ChemSusChem 17/2016)
The Back Cover Figure showsthe impact of plant capacity on the Investment cost, with the log scale illustrating economies-of-scale of biorefineries. The size of the bubbles reflects the uncertainty on Investment estimation, especially at the early stage when few process details are known. The Figure also indicates that the paper is addressed to chemists and provides them with basic cost ...
