Ocean Power connects wave energy system to grid

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. (Pennington, NJ) announced that it has achieved what it claims to be the first-ever connection of a wave-energy system to the power grid in the United States. Ocean Power’s PB40 Powerbuoy system is now delivering power to the grid at the U.S. Marine Corps Base Hawaii on the island of Oahu. The Powerbuoy unit, which was installed in December 2009 at a depth of about 100 feet a mile off the coast of Oahu, has been producing power from more than 3 million take-off cycles, for more than 4,400 hours as of September 27. The system has on-board sensors that monitor a wide variety of system performance variables, external conditions, and life-cycle parameters. The sensor data is transmitted to a shore-based facility via a fiber optic cable embedded in the submarine power transmission cable and then further transmitted via the internet to Ocean Power’s facility in Pennington.
