The Need
New York State has set high climate goals that lead the country in scale and ambition. Under its Climate Act, the state seeks to achieve 70% renewable sourced electricity by 2030, and a zero-emission electric grid by 2040.
Sites like landfills offer an ideal opportunity for reuse, especially for solar projects. Occupying large areas of land near urban centers, this valuable landscape offers an ideal opportunity for community solar projects that directly benefit communities in close proximity, which have typically seen these sites as an eyesore. AC Power, a woman-owned development company specializing in transforming previously disturbed land into productive solar fields, approached Catalyze in its objective to provide clean energy to the local Lancaster community on two landfill sites previously viewed as environmental hazards.
