Scandinavian Biogas has successfully solved a major environmental problem for the city of Ulsan in South Korea by increasing the capacity for anaerobic digestion of food waste into biogas.
The most efficient plant in the Republic of Korea
As a result of the improved treatment capacity, the city of Ulsan has now positioned itself as a role model for other cities in the country, a position that was further strengthened when the Yongyun plant was named the most efficient biogas plant in the Republic of Korea 2013. The raw gas is produced by co-digestion of food waste from Ulsan city with primary sludge from Yongyun’s sewage treatment plants. Back in 2007, the city of Ulsan treated 40 tons of food waste per day at Yongyun’s sewage treatment plant. The city needed urgently to increase the food waste treatment capacity and initial trails showed problems with the digester system.

Scandinavian Biogas was contracted for the BOT project and all work had to be done with a minimal influence on current food waste treatment. The improvements were finalized by the middle of 2010 and the city could thus start to re-direct food waste to the plant. By 2011, the amount of processed food waste had increased to 156 tons per day, with 191 tons in 2012, a figure that rose to an average of 208 tons of processed food waste per day in 2013. 2014 resulted in a small decrease, with an averge of 203 tons of food waste per day (183 tons of food waste per day in 2018). The gas production increased from 5 000-8 000 normal cubic meter per day to the current 28 300 (2016).
