The second–generation ethanol in the state of São Paulo - Brazil: understanding the stakeholders' point of view
This article aims at conducting a study on the productive sector of ethanol in Brazil, specifically regarding second–generation ethanol. To map the industry the technique of stakeholder analysis was used. The primary data were collected through semi structured interviews and questionnaires with ten experts from different stakeholder groups in the industry. The results showed that the ethanol plants, research funding agencies, technology centres and central government are the main stakeholders in the industry. The trends with greater impact on the future of the industry are investments in the development of second–generation ethanol, the high biomass production potential in Brazil and the process of industry concentration of ethanol plants, through mergers and acquisitions. The main uncertainties are the results of technology development of second–generation ethanol, the creation or not of subsidies for this technology and the possible commoditisation of the ethanol market.
