Hydrides

Hafnium Hydride

Mixed with oxidizing agents, HfH2 is used as a constituent part in compositions for flares, fuzes, and combustion charges in pyrotechnics. HfH2 will also be used as an alloying constituent in powder metallurgy.

Lithium Hydride and Sodium Hydride

Mixed with oxidizing agents ZrH2 will be used as a constituent part in compositions for flares, fuzes and combustion charges in pyrotechnics. As a binder or brazing component for grinding agents, carbides, ceramics, and metal in abrasive wheels and polishing disks. ZrH2 is also applicable as a hydrogen source for foaming of metals. For the production of highly effective getters and as an alloying constituent part ZrH2 will be used in the powder metallurgy. Lithium and sodium hydride both form ionic hydrides because of the strong electropositive character of the cation. In general they are not used as reducing agents but as strong bases in organic chemistry. Lithium hydride is used in limited quantities to manufacture high-purified monosilane and as a hydrogen source for various purposes.

Zirconium Hydride

Mixed with oxidizing agents ZrH2 will be used as a constituent part in compositions for flares, fuzes and combustion charges in pyrotechnics. As a binder or brazing component for grinding agents, carbides, ceramics, and metal in abrasive wheels and polishing disks. ZrH2 is also applicable as a hydrogen source for foaming of metals. For the production of highly effective getters and as an alloying constituent part ZrH2 will be used in the powder metallurgy.

Lithium Salts

Lithium Carbonate

Lithium carbonate, the first chemical in the production chain, is the building block for other lithium derivatives and used in a great variety of applications, like frits for the ceramic and enamel industries, heat resistant glass, aluminum production, pharmaceuticals, and lithium-ion batteries. Albemarle produces lithium carbonate at La Negra, Antofagasta in Chile, and in Nevada, USA, based on naturally occurring lithium brines.

Lithium Hydroxide

Lithium hydroxide, a strong base, is mainly used as a reagent in high-performance lithium greases, dyes, and in lithium-ion batteries. Albemarle produces lithium hydroxide technical grade in the USA and Germany. Our new plant in North Carolina, USA, is intended to mainly serve the battery industry as well as two plants in China.
