WECC/NERC Generator Testing and Model Validation Compliance
Generator owners have great interest in maximizing their power production while maintaining a high level of reliability and quality. The greatest generator performance is achieved through optimal tuning of generator controls (AVR, exciter, governor and power system stabilizer), limiters and protection. The Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) developed compliance programs requiring field testing and modeling of synchronous generators after major blackouts affected wide swaths of both the U.S. and Canada in 1996 and 2003, leaving 50 million customers without power for hours. Similar compliance programs have been adopted by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and its regional members, e.g., MOD 012 and MOD 024-027.
Operation and Maintenance Support for Independant Power Producers
BBA has a long history with the operation and maintenance support of IPP sites ranging from co-generation facilities to wind farms and run-of-the-river hydro sites. Our team is uniquely positioned to support operating sites given our technical background as designers and engineers-of-record for these facilities combined with our field experience gained through initial testing and commissioning and ongoing routine testing and maintenance mandates. We draw upon operational experience at IPP and larger-power facilities to help deliver optimal support on an as-needed basis, from minor technical consultation about operational issues or minor expansions through to full-scale modernization projects.
Specialized Services for Independent Power Producers
BBA conducts power system studies for small to large electric utilities, independent power producers and industrial plants (mining, petrochemical, pulp and paper, etc.). We can help you better understand your power system, identify deficiencies, as well as provide analyses and recommendations to improve performance and ensure compliance with electrical standards and codes, e.g., WECC/NERC and AESO. Our services are customizable and include a selection of power system analysis software for conducting studies. BBA’s power system studies are completed by highly trained professional engineers with extensive experience in electric power generation, transmission and distribution on systems ranging from 480 V to 765 kV. We collaborate to provide the best possible solutions, including detailed engineering recommendations, for the effective operation of your power system.
Combustible Dust Management
Certain industrial processes produce particles, powders and dust that are combustible and explosive. As a result, most installations present fire, flash fire and explosion hazards. Yet these hazards are generally little known and can lead to catastrophic accidents. Managers and supervisors are responsible for ensuring worker protection and plant longevity through compliance with regulatory requirements and by taking the appropriate measures to safeguard buildings and equipment. BBA holds cutting-edge expertise in this field and provides progressive services adapted to client needs, from technical assistance with risk assessments to comprehensive handling of installation upgrades and management of day-to-day risks. Our firm helps clients comply with statutory requirements by providing preventive solutions and by working with them to prioritize short- and medium-term actions.
