Volcanic rock is subjected to a process of heating and subsequent cooling abruptly, and crushed to obtain gravel. It has a vitrified appearance, it is a solid and insoluble material. The name comes from the population of “Puzzuoli”, at the foot of Vesuvius, Italy. Putzolana is the name given to the ashes and volcanic stones that come from this town, but today a variety of rocks, sands and volcanic rocks are known by that name.
