The sleeved purlin system is suitable for buildings with two or more bays and utilizes single span length purlins with sleeves. The sleeves are formed from the same section as the purlins but are installed inverted. The sleeves, which achieve a high degree of continuity over the purlin supports are fitted at all penultimate rafter connections and staggered on all internal bays, allowing economy of purlin section selection. The system can be used for single span purlins and for double span purlins.

The lap system is a further variation of the sleeved system which is suitable for buildings with five or more bays. Extended single span purlins are alternatively inverted and overlapped with each other. The lapped section has the benefit of achieving a high degree of continuity over the purlin supports thus allowing economic section selection. The avoidance of sleeves means that there are fewer system components and additionally reduced site erection time.
