DigSilent - Transmission Systems Consulting Services
Due to the expansion of renewables and the dismantling of conventional power plants, the transmission systems are currently subject to major changes. In periods of high feed-in of power from renewable sources in particular, power is fed back from the distribution networks, while the load flows over long distances and the exchange of power with the network partners increases as well. New transmission technologies and the complex characteristics of power systems without synchronous generation play a role as well. Current planning scenarios provide for the use of HVDC VSC systems for the transmission of power over long distances.

For example, more than 90% of the installed capacity of peripheral generating plants in Germany have already been connected to the heterogeneous distribution network levels of the low-, medium- and high-voltage networks. For the network operators, the statutory obligation to connect renewable energy sources results in high requirements to maintain technically safe and stable networks. DIgSILENT assists with the concept design and definition of protection settings for any kind of electrical network in order to achieve fast and selective fault clearance. The protection coordination studies are based on the use of manufacturer-specific PowerFactory relay models where possible, in combination with advanced calculation tools and result visualisations.

Furthermore, reviewing the compliance of the characteristics of generating units and generating plants with the respective grid codes is possible only on the basis of high-precision simulation models.

When generating units and consumers are to be integrated into the system, or the system is to be expanded on the basis of AC or HVDC systems, the applicable grid codes have to be complied with. Furthermore, it is important to analyse whether disturbances could be caused in the existing system in such a way as to necessitate a modification or adaptation of the respective grid code.
