Crystallization Technologies Services

The Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics (CSP), division »Crystallization Technologies«(CSP-LKT), provides a technology platform for industry related crystallization using production scale, state-of-the-art equipment. Our research activities focus on the reduction of process costs, the optimization of ingot properties, and the further automation of crystallization processes.

Silicon Wafer Research Services

More than 80 per cent of the global solar cell and photovoltaic module production is based on crystalline wafer technology. Further improvement of this technology requires increased cell efficiency as well as the usage of thinner wafers and a simultaneous reduction of wafer and cell breakage rates. The research activities of the »silicon wafers« group are focused on development and testing of methods for wafer manufacturing and characterization of wafers and solar cells regarding their mechanical properties.

Diagnostics Of Solar Cells Research Services

Efficiency, reliability and cost reduction in production processes are the driving forces for solar cells on future photovoltaic markets. The Group »Diagnostic of Solar Cells« is working on these topics for industrial customers and partners in research and development. With abroad spectrum of material science methodology – ranging from trace elemental analytics, quantum efficiency to atom scale microstructure diagnostics – the researchers are tracking down the conversion from light to electrical energy. The same way an efficient team play of light, electrons and material structure are crucial for the photovoltaic efficiency, the diagnostic competences arise through the interaction of the Teams »Electrical Characterization«, »TraceElemental Analytics«, »Microstructure Diagnostics«.

Module Reliability Services

Reliability, service life, and optimum performance: Aiming lower costs, these parameters are most important and challenging for any module manufacturer. The integral research topics within the group »Module Reliability« at Fraunhofer CSP apply to those challenges. Major topics are the characterization of solar modules, module components and materials, i.e.polymers, glass or packaging materials. Those topics are faced by an integral strategy of material science based analysis. This comprises mechanical experiments and characterization methods on component and module level, mechanical and thermo-mechanical Finite Element Analysis as well as performance tracking on laboratory basis and at locations outdoor.
