Solar PV systems generate electricity directly from solar irradiance. Their output is affected by geographical location, local weather conditions, module and inverter characteristics, and orientation and tilt.

Fuel powered generators or gensets are often used for resilience within microgrids and behind-the-meter for small-scale deployments, or to provide peak generation / contingency reserve within the wider power grid. This can include generators powered with gas, diesel, biofuel, or hydrogen.
