Heliostorage - Large Scale Thermal Energy Storage

The Heliostorage borehole thermal energy storage solution provides large-scale underground energy storage that enables the long term, energy efficient and eco-friendly storage of heat. One of the biggest challenges with any sensible heat storage solution is overcoming losses. Through multiple iterations and variations of drilling patterns over an 8 year period, the Heliostorage team have created an optimized borehole configuration that effectively charges and discharges the earth converting it into a heat battery

Heliostorage - Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage

Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage (STES) is an innovative technology designed for the efficient management of thermal energy. It operates on a cycle that has a six-month charge phase during spring and summer, followed by a six-month discharge phase throughout autumn and winter. This strategic approach allows the system to capture and store heat from various sources during the warmer months. Then, during the colder months, the stored heat is utilized to warm buildings and provide hot water. The clear division of the year into charge and discharge periods underlines the role of STES in ensuring a consistent and eco-friendly heat supply, significantly reducing the need for fossil fuels and contributing to decarbonization efforts.

Heliostorage - Solar Thermal Collectors

The Heliostorage solar thermal collectors have a unique patented profile that captures thermal energy throughout the day. Unlike flat panel collectors that require a specific elevation angle to achieve high efficiency at a single point in the day, the Heliostorage design maintains efficiency from sunrise until sunset, this is due to it’s built-in elevation angle. The solar collectors angular profile provides better solar radiation absorption during mornings and evenings than flat profile collectors.

Heliostorage - Smart Controller

The Heliostorage smart controller monitors, manages, and controls the energy balance in the entire system including solar thermal collectors, storage, heat pump (optional) and other components. Sensors throughout the system send real time data to the controller which lets the controller algorithms measure the impact of any changes. These algorithms have been designed to make the most efficient use of the heat available. This can mean that the heat is passed directly from the solar collectors to the heat consumer (hot water tank or heating system). Or, the heat may be passed to a heat pump to boost its efficiency. If there is no immediate use for the heat, it will be sent to storage for later use.

Heliostorage - Heat Pump (Optional)

The heat pump serves as an optional component within our solution, designed to supplement heating when other sources do not fully cover heating demands. We can integrate an existing heat pump into the system or supply a new one from a selection of top manufacturers, ensuring seamless compatibility and optimal performance.

Heliostorage - Different Customer Segments

Europe has made significant progress in decarbonizing its electricity sector, with a strong push towards renewable energy sources like wind and solar, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This effort attempts to shift the continent’s energy consumption towards cleaner alternatives.Similarly, in the transport sector, initiatives to increase electric vehicle use and improve public transportation networks aim to cut down fossil fuel usage linked to transport, further contributing to Europe’s green transition. However, the heating and cooling sector, which accounts for over half of Europe’s energy use, remains a critical area needing more focus. Despite advancements in other areas, the sheer volume of energy consumed by heating and cooling highlights the urgency for innovative solutions here and now.As Europe strives to achieve NetZero emissions, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of heating and cooling systems is essential for meeting these ambitious environmental goals.
