We are creating the largest hub of renewable energy manufacturers and their supply chains in the Humber. The opportunity The Humber provides the best location to access to all three of the UK’s largest wind farms. 80% of all North Sea offshore wind farms and 60% of the entire European market (2020) are within 12 hours steaming. Grimsby, closest to the mouth of the Humber, is already established as an operations and maintenance base and is servicing Rounds 1 and 2 offshore wind farms through Centrica, RES and Siemens who have chosen to locate here.

The Humber remains on track to become the UK’s largest centre for the processing and conversion of biomass, We’re harnessing our natural assets and expertise in agriculture, chemicals and engineering to capitalise on new opportunities in renewable energy. Entrepreneurial businesses are at the forefront of innovation here in the Humber, using natural products from rapeseed to soy and cooking oils, as well as household waste, to generate powe.

Our location has led to us building a unique body of marine and maritime influenced research and expertise, which is in demand around the world. We are attracting tidal power researchers and entrepreneurs to harness the power of the tides and enable the region to become a world leader in the development of wave and tidal technologies. Pulse Tidal and Neptune Renewable Energy are just two enterprises pioneering tidal test devices in the Humber. Energy and environment is a major thrust of the University of Hull. Tank testing at their Total Environment Simulator research facility, housed at The Deep, and its world-leading expertise in wave power, tidal stream, wind turbulence, data analysis and mathematical modelling is playing a crucial role in the design and development of highly efficient, commercially viable turbines. Being at the forefront of this pioneering industry provides the opportunity to become a world leading exporter of tidal power equipment and expertise in the future.
