The Origin of the Surgical Smoke Evacuation Industry

In 1983, Ioan and Elena Cosmescu emigrated from Soviet-dominated Romania and settled in Phoenix, Arizona. Six years later the Cosmescu’s launched I.C. Medical, and for more than 30 years the company has been at the forefront of advances in surgical practice. Today, I.C. Medical is recognized globally for the design and manufacture of devices and techniques that have materially improved surgical safety, efficacy and OR outcomes.

A Pioneer in Surgical Smoke Evacuation

Ioan Cosmescu, an inventor and biomedical engineer, and Elena Cosmescu, a registered nurse and hospital administrator, both came to America with deep knowledge and experience in healthcare, surgical practice and hospital operations. While working in healthcare and medical settings in the U.S., they saw the need for a more effective way to capture and eliminate surgical smoke in operating room environments.

Ioan Cosmescu, a life-long problem-solver, inventor and entrepreneur, set about coming up with a totally new approach to capturing and eliminating surgical plume. One of his first and most significant inventions, the automation of smoke evacuation, was patented in the U.S. in 1990. The revolutionary Crystal Vision^® system was a dramatic improvement over previous smoke evacuation methods in terms of capture effectiveness, ease of use and field clarity.

Today, Cosmescu’s revolutionary end-to-end smoke evacuation capture and evacuation system design has become industry standard, used in ORs throughout the world.

I.C. Medical’s surgical smoke evacuation systems and accessories undergo rigorous QA and testing procedures to ensure that they are manufactured to the highest standards as well as regular audits by the FDA, ISO, CE and CSA.

Why I.C. Medical’s in-house production process matters: The tendency of low-cost manufacturers to cut corners and manipulate product quality is well known. Quality fade (a gradual fade-away over time in which quality is reduced in small incremental amounts) is a significant problem associated with outsourcing. Defaulting to minimum cost labor, short-cutting fabrication processes, altering chemical formulations, curtailing sanitary standards, and using sub-standard materials are tactics that impugn quality, safety, and product integrity. In some foreign jurisdictions, these practices are enabled by lax oversight and enforcement of product safety requirements, and the problem is often further exacerbated by the practice of outsourcing work to smaller, grittier facilities that can skirt environmental controls and safety standards for products and workers.
