Today’s expansion and interconnection of grid infrastructures highlights the need for many new substations to upgrade, replace, or augment existing, aging substations. MEPPI recognizes that Air Insulated Substations will represent a significant portion of these new substations and commits to a turnkey approach similar to our Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) solutions.

Mitsubishi Electric HVDC systems provide precise control over power flows and elevate existing stability limitations. Alternative sources of power generation, such as renewables, are typically at great distances from load centers. In these cases, connection through HVDC systems is the optimal solution, when considering reactive power compensation requirements and overall system stability with an AC-based alternative.

Mitsubishi Electric began its industry leadership in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), building its first in 1968. In 1973, it installed the first 500kV hybrid gas-insulated substation. Three years later, Mitsubishi Electric constructed the world’s first 550kV fully gas insulated switchyard at the Ohi Nuclear Power Station, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Japan. Since then, more than 20,000 GIS bays have been installed in substations worldwide.
