Steadily increasing costs for energy and natural resources pose a growing challenge to small and medium-sized enterprises. Hence, energy and material efficiency combined with environmental protection are essential aspects for sustainable economies.

Germany and the European Union have set ambitious goals for increasing energy efficiency. Article 8, paragraph 4 – 7 of the energy efficiency guideline 2012/27/EU regulates that companies, which are not small and medium-sized (SME) and have not yet introduced an energy management system (EMS) according to DIN EN ISO 50001, are obliged to perform an energy audit according to DIN ISO 16247-1.

The DIN EN ISO 50001 standard describes the requirements on an energy management system (EnMS). This enables a company to continually improve its energetic performance by using a systematic approach while complying with legal requirements as well as with other obligations imposed on the organization. The use of an EnMS leads to constantly increasing energy efficiency, which in turn leads to cost reductions and thus strengthens a company’s competitiveness. Energy management does not only influence organizational and technical workflows, but also influences the working practices of the employees involved.
