Sargent & Lundy has designed more than 300 combined-cycle and simple-cycle power plants, from 2000-MW and larger energy centers to 30-MW black start peakers. The wide-ranging work includes diverse major equipment suppliers and developed designs. This extensive experience provides us with current, in-depth knowledge of capital costs and plant and equipment configurations.

Sargent & Lundy has engineered more coal-fired units than any other AE in the United States. Our 544 coal-fired unit designs represent 61,353 MW of generating capacity. Our experience spans a wide range of coals and lignite and the advanced technologies that deliver environmentally sound operation. We have received design authorizations from approximately 60 clients, including several long-term clients who have returned to Sargent & Lundy for additional coal-fired units. Many of our designs included pioneering technologies that were developed and implemented by Sargent & Lundy and are now accepted throughout the industry.

Sargent & Lundy roles on renewable energy projects range from full-design architect-engineer, owner’s engineer, lender’s independent engineer/technical advisor, or consultant. Our services include specialized technical advisory and consulting services to complete engineering and program management, encompassing procurement, construction management, technology transfer, and assistance with construction. Sargent & Lundy provides professional consulting, engineering, and design services throughout the life cycle of power generation projects. Our services support clients from project concept and development, through detailed design and procurement, construction, and operation.

Selecting the most appropriate site is a critical step in the development of a power plant project. A good site can significantly decrease costs, increase public acceptance, and facilitate regulatory approvals. Many factors affect the suitability of a site, and the evaluation of these factors demands the integration of many professional disciplines. Sargent & Lundy’s approach to site selection studies is designed to integrate the necessary disciplines in the most cost-effective manner. This successful integration of engineering, environmental, and economic disciplines ensures that plant sites worthy of consideration are optimized and sites with unfavorable characteristics are eliminated early in the study.
