A typical natural gas fired 3-pass shell boiler raising steam at 10 bar g will exhaust flue gases to atmosphere at approximately 230°C making it a valuable source for heat recovery. The treated water fed to the boiler from the storage tank is typically maintained at a temperature of 80-85°C.

A hot water boiler economiser recovers otherwise waste heat from the boiler exhaust gases in order to preheat hot water return flow to the boiler. Recovering this waste heat will reduce the boiler fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for the same hot water output in the region of 4-6%. To maintain a single serpentine economiser design with an economical finned tube size, a shunt pump is introduced to the economiser system to divert a percentage of the overall hot water return flow through the economiser before it is sent to the hot water boiler.

Waste heat boilers are often used to raise steam or hot water by utilising the heat from hot gases exhausted by high energy equipment such as gas engines, turbines, incinerators and regenerating furnaces. A waste heat boiler economiser can be retrofitted onto the exhaust ductwork of the boiler to further cool down exhaust gases and so preheat the boiler feed water. The uplift in boiler efficiency can be significant, resulting in a higher steam generation output. (Up to 20%).

The gas cooler transfers the heat from the exhaust gases into thermal oil, which is then pumped to an air or heat recovery unit or to an air blast cooler where the hot air is discharged to atmosphere. Dirty gases are accommodated by using the integral soot blowers. The cooled oil is then returned to the gas cooling system in a closed loop “run-around” system.
