The challenges of cold climate regions should never be underestimated. Particularly icing is a prob-lem. The met mast construction and the installed sensors have to be chosen carefully. The instruments have to be properly heated by a reliable power system.With our long-term experience in wind measurement and our local installation partners we can offer complete measurement systems robust enough for harsh and cold climates. Ammonit offers standard heating systems as well as individual heating solutions, which combine several power sources suitable for the site. Challenges for measurement campaigns in cold climatesReliable power supply system for heating systemRemote measurement systems have to be properly sup-plied with power. Solar modules are not suf? cient to sup-ply heated measurement systems. Suitable power supply systems have to be installed, e.g., hybrid systems.Communication systemMeasurement campaigns in harsh climates often have a lack of available communication connec-tions, e.g., GSM. Satellite systems can be an op-tion.Dif? culties in estimating the wind conditionsMeteorological conditions make it dif? cult to calculate the wind conditions at hub height, when the installed met mast is much lower.Inconsistent measurement dataDue to disturbances of the sen-sor caused mostly by icing, the measurement campaign can have gaps with no data or wrong data. The installation of appro-priate sensors and a regular data quality check are essential.Icing of sensorsIce can form on the sensor and disturb or stop the col-lection of data. Heated sensors (e.g., ultrasonic ane-mometers) or sensors particularly designed for harsh climates should be installed and properly supplied.Icing of met mast constructionFreezing rain, rime and snow can ballast the mast construction. The met mast can be damaged or col-lapse.
