For our worldwide clients we shape the future of electricity through specific solutions. We act as an enabler of clients’ technical decisions, contributing to value creation.CESI SpA was established in 1956 to support the development and the secu-rity of operations of the Italian Electricity Grid, as well as to provide testing laborato-ries and certification services for the elec-tromechanical industry. The company has always played a leading global role as an independent centre of excellence in the testing and certification of electromechani-cal components and in electrical systems R&D. Over the years, CESI has expanded its business internationally through the acqui-sition of two leading German companies in the testing of high, medium and low volt-age electrical components (IPH and FGH, located respectively in Berlin and Man-nheim). The company has also expanded its business portfolio to environmental and structural civil engineering sectors through the acquisition of ISMES.Today, CESI is a world leader in consulting and testing services for elec-tricity sector players. CESI is internation-ally involved in projects like Super Grid, Smart Metering, Smart Grid, Micro Grid and HVDC interconnections.CESI is deeply involved in the realisation of so-called “advanced metering infrastruc-tures” (AMI) In Smart Grids for Distribu-tion; a system composed of digital meters, concentrators, communication systems, operational software for automatic reading acquisition and Automated Metering Manage-ment (AMM). In the field of Smart Grids for Transmission, CESI cooperates with the main national and international TSOs (Transmis-sion System Operators) in the development of customised applications to be installed in the network’s Control Room. CESI is thus a longtime network improvements provider, working for the “smartness” of the grid.CESI is the market leader in the testing and certification of electro-mechanical components and is one of the most important players at the international level. Tests are performed in accordance with international standards of IEC, ANSI, STL, local standards and clients’ explicit requests. CESI is a founder member of STL (Short-Circuit Testing Liaison), in which our German Subsidiary IPH also plays an important role. It is important to underline that product certificates and test reports from CESI - Milan, IPH – Berlin and FGH – Mannheim, are internationally recognised by utilities and electromechanical manu-facturers and serve to verify: • Products’ conformity to standards• Functionality of new product design• Compliance with safety requirements and EU Guidelines as a pre-requisite to obtain the CE mark• Compliance with quality requirements A positive outcome of the tests performed at CESI premises is that they assure access to the international markets. In fact, 60% of CESI’s laboratory tests are driven by interna-tional markets. The acquisition of ISMES, IPH and FGH represent an important step in the development of CESI’s range of activities and services for the market, enabling us to carry out the following: • Testing of cables, fuses, insulators, load break switches, OPGW switchgear and controlgear, surge arrester disconnec-tors, and low, medium and high voltage transformers both in AC and DC, up to 50Hz and 60Hz• Testing on electronic power components and smart meters• Environmental noise and vibration im-pact assessment, measures, analysis and reporting • Thermal and climatic tests• Electromagnetic studies, field testing and remediation projects• Testing on high risk environments for blasts and blazes • Testing on large electrical enginesCESI offers its clients experience and knowl-edge in keeping laboratory facilities in line with the most advanced international practices. With more than 60 satellites in orbit powered by solar cells, CESI is internationally accepted as a well advanced technology leader. The char-acteristics of solar cells produced by CESI are:Space applications >Solar cells for space applications: The cells are built using modules InGaP (Indium Gallium Phosphide) and GaAs (gallium arsenide) and overcome 30% to 35% of conversion efficien-cies, using new materials, nano-structures and multi junction technologies. The most im-portant feature is their resistance: more than 30 years of life and capable of withstanding temperatures from -250°C to +300°C. Our cells are qualified according to ESA standards. Terrestrial concentration systems > The terrestrial application of these high ef-ficiency solar cells is economically convenient for concentrator photovoltaic systems (CPV). In this application, triple junction solar cells demonstrated to overcome 38% of conver-sion efficiency.
