Major players in CSP have been working hard to drive down their LCOE, and many have made impressive inroads—just look at the downward trending price of power from NOOR 1, to NOOR 2 and 3, followed by Redstone, and then Solar Reserve’s record breaking bid price of 6.3 cents per kWh in Chile. Then, in a very recent open tender for Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, ACWA put in a bid at under 10 cents per kWh. Ok, so Solar Reserve beat that figure by around 3 cents. But here’s the kicker: solar thermal for DEWA predicts to achieve that price based on as little as a 5 GW basis. PV, though cheaper, typically requires a minimum plant size of around 300-plus gigawatts to attain such low
figures.
