Alongside this vigour, demand for solar energy has intensified (with an average 30% growth a year over the past 20 years) against a backdrop of rapidly declining costs and prices. Whilst it is predicted that solar PV will have a 36% share of this expanding market, CSP is currently anticipated to claim 8% - but this is set to soar. And fast.Against a backdrop of political support for renewables, governments are seeking long-term security in energy – CSP fills the void. With a bankable technology that’s not only predictable but also reliable, the International Energy Agency (IEA) envisages that by 2050 CSP could provide 11.3% of global electricity. The next two years are critical if market volume is to reach €23bn in 2020 as predicted, and if the 89 planned plants in 16 countries achieve their multi-GW capacity. It all began in Spain… but the CSP industry has already begun to evolve into a global market. Although Spain and the USA together represent 90% of the market, Algeria, Australia, Egypt, France, Italy, India, Mexico, Morocco and South Africa are all constructing or planning CSP plants, ready to learn from the experiences of those who have done it, and done it well And investors are taking notice too, with confidence in CSP at an all-time high…With headline news made in mergers and acquisitions, radical R&D projects and monumental construction milestones, you’d be forgiven for wondering why CSP isn’t already the golden boy of the renewables industry. All the signs point to CSP hotting up in 2012 - 2013, but it hasn’t been plain sailing so far… and the waters look set to get even rougher over the next 12 months.Survival of the fittest in the renewables worldThe energy generation mix is being shaken up and renewables are fighting for a place within it. CSP has come a long way; however, it is now facing the toughest test of all: to get competitive. To put it bluntly, this is the survival of the fittest… CSP has so far gone at its own pace towards competitiveness, but the competition has moved faster – photovoltaics offers price points with which many say CSP simply cannot compete. With an average generation cost of 15c€/KWh in Europe, the energy payback time for the most cutting-edge technologies is six months. This is set to plunge even further with expected generation costs of down to 0,07 €/kWh in almost all of Europe by 2020 To put this in perspective, the prices of solar panels are falling so fast that by 2013 they will cost half of what they cost in 2009… can CSP compete? If the industry is to stand a chance of really seizing market share, the challenge is clear. It’s critical to drive down costs through economies of scale and exploit new technologies and opportunities so that CSP can one day stand subsidy-free.
