The integration offeatures such as synchronization and protection aswell as energy and power metering makes it the mostpowerful entec control system up to now.The requirements for a small hydropower controlsystem are manifold. The DTCVario control systemovercomes these requirements by using a modularapproach. Maximum flexibility is achieved by aconsistent and modular integration of new functionsinto the main software. This results in a compactdesign, a high reliability and lower system cost.The DTCVario control system combines turbinegoverning, electrical protection, synchronization,alarm handling, energy and power metering, datalogging, control of cooling and greasing mechanisms,control of gates, trashrack cleaners and otherperipheral systems of the hydropower plant in onesystem.The concept is based on modern informationtechnology: The control system is of the layered typeand power and control part of the system are strictlyseparated. The layers used correspond to thefollowing (see figure above): physical level, signalconversion, process, field bus and user interface.The modularity of the DTCVario permits easyretrofitting of control and power part which is whyseveral standard and specialized applications arepossible.DTCAsync Light: Controls one turbine with a gridconnected asynchronous generatorDTCVario Standard: Controls one unit (generatorand turbine) either in isolated or grid connected mode(exclusively)DTCVario Island: Controls one unit in isolatedmode with grid connectionDTCVario Multi: Controls 24 units either in isolatedor grid connected modeDTCVario Connect: Controls 24 units in isolatedmode with grid connectionDTCVario Hybrid: Controls one unit and a secondvoltage source (e.g. PV, wind)interconnected automationSeveral turbine units can be interconnected.The superior master control system allowscentralized control and monitoring. Watermanagement (how many turbine units should begenerating for an optimal efficiency) and otherdevices such as trash rack or fish pass are allcontrolled by the master unit. Up to four turbinegroups can be managed by one master.core unitThe heart of the DTCVario is the doubleprocessor control unit. The fast Vario processor(left) measures, monitors and processes theelectrical parameters. The module performs thesynchronisation and handles functions such aselectrical monitoring and protection as well aspower measurement. The DTCAsync Light getsby without the Vario processor for the benefit ofa costeffective solution.The higherlevel PLC processor (right) isresponsible for turbine control, plantmonitoring, alarm coordination as well as userinterface and remote control communication.More than forty different safety and redundancychecks are performed in real time and assureboth secure monitoring and reliabletroubleshooting. In case of emergency orerrors, the DTCVario triggers the necessaryreaction and logs detailed alarm messages withtime stamps.The DTCVario is prepared for the age ofdecentralized, scaleable "virtual power plants".The controller was also developed for thecombination of different energy sources – idealfor power producers who want to manage theirplant centrally and might want to extend it stepby step.The core unit with the Vario processor (left) and the PLC processor(right)Combination of 3 turbine units with one masterdtcvario web interfaceThe DTCVario sets new standards using open webtechnology. This provides a cost effective possibility ofremote control via internet, public phone net or GSMnet.The control system saves all relevant operation data,alarm messages, production data and also freelyprogrammable data through the data logger. These datacan be accessed and displayed userfriendly by the WebInterface. The Web Interface only needs a personalcomputer running a standard web browser.The Web Interface can also be used locally as operatorpanel with touch screen.DTCVario Web Interface: Histogram shows themonthly productionDTCVario Web Interface: Main page of a small hydropower plant with 2 unitsactuator ta2x and ta3xWith its oilhydraulic actuator TA2x / 3x, entecoffers a versatile and solid positioning unit whichperfectly suits the DTCVario. The Ta2x / 3x is anenergyefficient, innovative hightech solution with avariable speed pump. Extremely smooth, fast andprecise positioning is the result of this design.A special valve setup enables the Ta2x / 3x tooperate more than one lever with only one actuator:Nozzle, jet deflector and safety valveof a pelton turbineTwo positioning units and safety valveof a double regulated Kaplan turbine orof a double chamber crossflow turbineThe Ta2x is designed for operation with a closingweight or a closing spring.
