History November 12, 1944, the first basic patent forEckrohr-Boilers was applied for. During this time oil asfuel ran short. All efforts, to save energy and usedomestic and alternate resources, were to be made. Onecame up with an idea, to operate cars and trucks, not ongasoline or diesel fuel, but with steam.Dr. Vorkauf, a specialist for water circulation in boilers, especially in La Mont boilers (forced circulation boilers),got the order to design a small boiler for a steam enginefired with coal or wood. The result was not as expected aforced circulation boiler, but a natural circulation boiler. Aforced circulation boiler of this size would have been toocostly.Due to his experience with the La Mont boiler Dr.Vorkauf had the idea to obtain a pre-separation of thesteam - water mixture in front of the drum. An extremelylively water circulation resulted from unheateddowncomers and a suitable arrangement of the mixturetubes. The unheated downcomers were installed in the 4corners of the boiler, where they not only served thepurpose of water circulation, but also as a support framefor the boiler. The boiler with such an arrangement of thedowncomers in the corners was called Corner TubeBoiler (Eckrohrkessel, Eckrohr-Boiler).Fig. 1: Corner Tube-BoilerFig. 2: Ford truck with Corner Tube-Boiler The boiler was installed in a couple of trucks, withmodified Ford engines. Here again it needed to beclarified that this actually was a steam engine, whichshould not be mistaken for the rather frequently usedgas generators. From the outside both units lookedrather similar. This small boiler has grown to be ademanded industrial boiler for all imaginablepurposes. It is tailor made for the actual application. In those days as well as today qualified boilercompanies manufacture Eckrohr-Boilers. Due to theliberal exchange of experience within the Eckrohr-Boilergroup it becomes possible, to develop Eckrohr-Boilerswith larger capacities, step by step. By nowEckrohr-Boilers are operating with steaming capacitiesof 216 t/h, steam pressures of 136 bar andsuperheated steam temperatures of 525 °C. Highercapacities are in the design stage. In the fifties one mainadvantage was the lack of supporting frames. Since theintroduction of welded tube walls this has provedadvantageous in regions prone to earthquakes. Nowadays operating conditions like highefficiency, good behaviour at load changes and quickstart-up have more preferences.
