Fully Automatic Mothermik® Wood Electrification Installation for Long Term Operation
Mothermik®Wood electrificationinstallationsR e g e n e r a t i v e , C O 2 n e u t r a l e n e r g y – M a d e i n G e r m a n yMembercompanyintheBundesverbandBioEnergiee.V.Bio energy, electricity and heat from native wood. Our wood electrification concept is unique in the market.Much more than 10 years of developmentwork stand behind our innovative, trendsetting, regenerative cogeneration technology –in addition the more than 25 years of matureknow how of a company which is extensivelyindependent from suppliers. The goal was the development of an automaticcomplete system for the electrical conversionof wood. Our own developed wood gasifierwith the appropriate components, like woodlogistics, including dryer, gas and waterprocessing, as well as the adjustment of provenpilot injection engine technology make possiblethe continuous operation. The automatic Mothermik® woodelectrification installation (WEI) is currentlyunique in the market. The highest safetytechnical standard (CE, Atex, GS) as wellas the consequent environmental and emissionprotection characterize the Mothermik® WEI.The CO2 neutral production of energy usingnative, growing wood is a decisive contributionto the reduction of our dependence on fossil, finite energy carriers. The political demandsfor future-safe, climate friendly production ofenergy is thus accommodated for.The function principleUntreated forest or landscape maintenancewood serves as a fuel. Wood in the form ofchopped wood chips (G50), including the bark,is used. One year old plant components likeneedles, leaves etc. are not suitable for theprocess. The chopped wood is, dependingon the delivered condition, dried to the watercontents needed for the process of < 15 %.The needed heat energy is provided from theongoing process. The entire necessary wood manipulation, as ofthe chopped chip warehouse, within the facilitybuilding is carried out by an intelligent grabbingcrane system which is measured in three axles. All transport tasks, from the delivery surface tothe gasifier infeed, are reliably taken care of inan energy efficient manner. Due to the woodlogistic concept, you can completely do withoutthe conventional conveyor technology, likespirals, bottom dischargers, belts or manualinfeeds. The wood chop chips are automatically fedinto the wood gasifier in the required amounts. There with the addition of air as a gasifyingmeans continuously wood gas is produced. At the end of the process, before the completeashing, a small amount of charcoal coke isdischarged. This accumulates in the form of apowder, is transferred using a chain conveyorsystem to special collection containers and canbe sold to the industry for example as a rawmaterial for the production of grill briquettes. You do not need to dispose of the ash.The hot wood gas which is discharged from thereactor is processed in several stages and thenfed into the pilot injection engine. There undercontinuous feeding in of a low amount ofignition oil (bio diesel RME) the wood gas isburned in the engine. The motor cogeneration plant, consisting of thepilot injection engine with exhaust fume heatexchanger and generator, is completelyoperated with power heat coupling. The heatflow of the gasifier facility and the motor cancompletely be made available for chopped chipsdrying, or essentially coupled out for theexternal heat use (heating, consumption waterheating or process heating at 80 °C/60 °C).The produced electrical energy is fed into thepublic mains, must be accepted by the localnetwork operator and is paid for according tothe valid regulations.3The installation is equipped with a novel gasification reactor –Geometry and highly effective gas processingChemical reactions with wood gasifyingPyrolysis (endothermal/exothermal):Wood polymers ? gaseous and liquidpyrolysis productsOxidation (exothermal):C + O2 ? Here above allhydrocarbons result. In the reduction zone, the actual wood gas withan end temperature of approx. 550 °C is created,as well as charcoal coke. The produced wood gas flows through theoutput of the reactor for the gas processingstretch. High quality charcoal coke is dischargedfor the further usage. In the homogenous firebed of the oxidationzone, the thermal-chemical gasification istriggered when air is added at up to 1,100 °C.Pre-cleanedView in the oxidation zoneFinal cleaned??? ???Gas and water processingWood gas is a low calorie weak gas (mainburning shares CO, H2 and CH4) with a heatingvalue of approx. 1/7 of the heating value ofnatural gas. After the discharge from thereactor, it is a gas with approx. 550 °C,contaminated with charcoal coke dust, flue ashand a diversity of unburned hydrocarbons(wood tar). In order to make possible anenduring use of the wood gas, a reliably highlyeffective gas processing is needed. For thisMothermik® uses a two stage process whichthey have developed themselves. In the first stage, the gas is cooled down usinga quenching unit to a temperature of approx.50 °C which is suitable for the motors, andthus is freed from the dust particles (see flameimage pre-cleaned, orange-red throughhydrocarbons). Then the gas is lead to aredundant, highly effective high voltageseparator which removes remaining particles, drop shaped hydrocarbons and condensedwater (see flame image final cleaned, light bluethrough purity and CO). The refined wood tarand the condensed water are led back to thequenching water cycle. In the facility’s internal quenching water cycle, there is a settling tank. There a sludge settleswhich consists of charcoal coke dust, wood tarand water. This sludge is discharged fromthe system using an automatic conveyor systemand taken to the collective container. The sludge is properly disposed of. A systemfor the homogenizing and refeeding of thesludge in the oxidation zone, to the completerecirculation, is in the test phase.Excessive condensed water is stored in thequenching water cycle and directly returnedto the reactor, so that operation of the facilitywithout waste water is possible. Only withunfavorable operating conditions can there bean excessive onset of condensed water. This must then be properly disposed of.4Laureate ofInnovation Award 2004Rhineland-PalatinateMothermik® wood electrification installations (WEI)Typ MTHG.CNm.250Our delivery and service scope consists of:• Gasification reactor with gas and water treatment• Automatic grabbing crane including control•Wood chopped chips dryer including control• Control with visualizing and date remote conveyance in the container• Motor cogeneration plant in soundproofed container with proven pilot injection engine, rotary current generator, SPS control, exhaust gas heat exchanger, oxidation catalyzer, exhaust gas chimney and wood gas flare• Available in the module construction of 1, 2 or 4 modules, each 250 kW• Support with projecting, planning and implementation of authorization procedures• Assembly and start up of operation• Training of operators• Customer service and spare parts supply around the clock, directly by Mothermik®,outside of Germany by Mothermik® representativesEnergy balance of the WEI based on 7,000 operating hoursInitial quantities (relating to the fuel dry mass)Heating value of the wood Hu atro 5.00 kWh/kgHeating value of the ignition oil Hu approx. 9.50 kWh/lInput wood atro approx. 1,323 toInput bio diesel / RME approx. 56,000 litersQzu wood atro approx. 6,615,000 kWhQzu Bio diesel / RME approx. 532,000 kWhQzu total approx. 7,147,000 kWhEnergy consumption electrical approx. 105,000 kWhmax. electrical infeed capacity 250 kWOutput quantitiesOutput charcoal coke approx. 105 tQab electrical approx. 1,750,000 kWhQab thermal heating warmth approx. 1,680,000 kWhEfficiency and specific quantities?el of the WEI*) approx. 25-28 %spec. wood consumption atro approx. 0.72 kg/kWhelspec. electrical work approx. 1.25-1.40 kWhel/kgspec. thermal work (80°C) approx. 1.2 kWhth/kg*) relating to the chopped wood chips according to the input quantities (atro), input feeding / power on the clamp generatorSpecific values of a 1 module WEI (mass balance)referring to 7,000 operating hoursInitial quantities per hour per yearIgnition oil consumption approx.*) 7.0 liters 56,000 litersChopped chips consumption atro max approx. 189 kg 1,323 toWood volumes spruce/fir approx. 1.26 srm 8,820 srmWood apparent weight atro approx. 150 kg/srm (chopped chips, spruce/fir G50)Output quantities per hour per yearCharcoal coke discharge approx. 12-18 kg 105 tomaximum electrical infeed capacity 250 kW 1,750,000 kWhmaximum heat coupling approx.**) 240 kW 1,680,000 kWh*) Bio diesel (RME)**) Only motor cooling water heat 80 °C/60 °C.
