International Journal on Hydropower & Dams 2013 Editorial Programme & Rates
H&D Content and MissionThe bi-monthly Journal disseminates information on abroad range of topics relating to water resources development and in particular hydropower production, fromscientific research papers, to descriptive articles, case studies, policy papers and news items.State-of-the-art research papers focus on subjects such asimproving the efficiency, safety and economy of machinery, materials for dams, or hydraulic research.Project descriptions focus on innovative or challengingschemes, including new developments (large and small)and refurbishments/upgrades.Policy papers look at national development targets andplans, as well as global challenges such as environmentalmanagement, social issues and concerns about climatechange.Special issues focus on the regions of the world with themost active water resources development programmesunder way, and large potential for the future (such as Asia,Africa, Latin America) and regions were upgrading, retro-fitting and refurbishment schemes are on-going.The Journal aims to present a balanced view of the roleand benefits of hydropower, and to encourage best practicein planning, design, construction and operation. Papers reflect new trends in the industry, such as developments in marine energy systems, and increasing interest in pumped-storage schemes, to help support the increasing use of intermittent sources of renewable energysuch as wind and solar power.Reports are published on the activities and initiatives of theinternational professional associations, such as ICOLD,IEA, ICID, IWRA, ESHA, the World Water Council, theAfrican Union and others.Participating in industry activitiesThe team travels extensively throughout the world, to participate at international events, visit projects and toserve on committees and panels.During 2012, the Hydropower & Dams team organized twomajor international conferences (ASIA 2012 in Chiang Mai,Thailand, and HYDRO 2012 in Bilbao, Spain). Opening andClosing addresses, and the preparation of an extensiveoverview report summarizing outcomes, disseminated ahuge volume of information on the most critical topics forthe industry.Alison Bartle has continued to serve on ICOLD’s Committee on Public Awareness and Education, contributing to the further development of ICOLD’s Communications Plan.Deputy Editor Steve Usher has played an active role aspart of the working group developing and reviewing theIEA’s Hydropower Technology Roadmap (which waslaunched at HYDRO 2012 in Bilbao). H&D also participated at the 6th World Water Forum (Marseille), Hidroenergia (Wroclaw), ICOLD’s 80th AnnualMeeting and 24th Congress (Kyoto), the Africa EnergyForum (Berlin), HydroVision (Louisville), the annual meetings of the British Dam Society (Leeds) and the BritishHydropower Association (Glasgow), and All-Africa EnergyWeek (Addis Ababa).During meetings at the African Union in 2012, it was decided that Aqua~Media’s AFRICA 2013 conference willform part of the ‘Programme for Infrastructure Developmentin Africa’, an initiative to stimulate large-scale hydro development in Africa, led by the AU, UNECA and AdDB.AMI Hydropower FoundationAqua~Media International foundedthe AMI Hydropower Foundation,a charitable body governed by aBoard of Trustees, in 2007.A percentage of revenue from theannual Hydro Conferences is transferred to the Foundationeach year, and some additional donations are made by com-panies and individuals in the hydropower profession. The funds are used to assist some delegates from the lessdeveloped countries to attend the H&D Hydro Conferences, with applications for funding being reviewed by the Trustees. In this way Aqua~Media helps to ensure that the expertiseemerging from the presentations and discussions reachesthe parts of the world where it is most urgently needed. About 60 delegates from the less developed countries havebeen assisted to attend conferences since 2008.EDITORIAL POLICY AND PROFILEISSUE ONERegional Focus - South and East Asia• Pelton turbine technology• Concrete dam safety• Environmental aspects• Sedimentation managementEditorial deadline: 14 January 2013Advertising deadline: 21 January 2013Ad material supply: 25 January 2013Publication date: 1 February 2013ISSUE TWOAFRICA 2013 - SPECIAL ISSUE Regional Focus - AfricaSpecial publication: Map of Hydropower & Dams in Africa 2013• Hydropower in Ethiopia• Water storage in the African region• Flood discharge works• Francis turbine technologyExtra circulation: AFRICA 2013 Addis Ababa, Ethiopiaand ICOLD European Club Meeting, Venice, ItalyEditorial deadline: 11 February 2013Advertising deadline: 11 March 2013Ad material supply: 15 March 2013Publication date: 25 March 2013ISSUE THREE Regional Focus - Latin America• Dam safety• Small and micro hydro• CFRDs• Construction plant• Electrical engineeringEditorial deadline: 12 April 2013Advertising deadline: 16 May 2013Ad material supply: 20 May 2013Publication date: 31 May 2013ISSUE FOURSPECIAL ICOLD ISSUE Regional Focus - North America• Dams and hydro in Canada and the USA• Dam safety• Retrofitting and upgrades• Kaplan turbines• Managing hydropower assets• Software systemsExtra circulation: ICOLD 2013, Seattle, USA Editorial deadline: 3 June 2013Advertising deadline: 1 July 2013Ad material supply: 8 July 2013Publication date: 12 July 2013WORLD ATLAS& INDUSTRY GUIDE 2013Special publication: World Map of Hydropower & Dams 2013• Comments• Statistical tables• World survey• Industry GuideIf you would like to help update our country reports or statistics, please contact the Editorial Department (see details below)Advertising deadline: 19 August 2013Ad material supply: 27 August 2013Publication date: 30 August 2013ISSUE FIVEHYDRO 2013 AUSTRIA - SPECIAL ISSUERegional Focus - Europe• Pumped storage • Underground works• Concrete dams• Instrumentation systems• Operation and maintenanceExtra circulation: HYDRO 2013, AustriaEditorial deadline: 19 August 2013Advertising deadline: 20 September 2013Ad material supply: 24 September 2013Publication date: 27 SeptemberISSUE SIXRegional Focus - Russia and Central Asia• Engineering in extreme climates• Innovations in technology• Hydromechanical equipment• Marine energy• Gates and valvesEditorial deadline: 25 October 2013Advertising deadline: 25 November 2013Ad material supply: 28 November 2013Publication date: 9 December 2013Articles should be submitted in Word, as plain files, with no elaborate formatting.Photographs should be sent as separate JPEG files, scanned at a resolution of 300dpi.
