When used in a run of river configuration, Kaplan power plants can help to accommodate smaller-sized reservoirs, limiting the impact on the environment. Kaplan turbines are characterized by adjustable blades and wicket gates which enable them to deliver efficient output over a wide range of heads and discharge – an important feature given they are frequently used where river flows vary significantly with the season. Their vertical configuration allows larger runner diameters (over 10 m) which increases unit power and decreases the number of units needed. Innovations for optimized performance and reliabilityAlstom has been leading the way in innovating Kaplan power plants for increased performance and reliability for its customers, since it introduced its first Kaplan turbine in 1925.Maintenance-free stator frame: The generator’s stator elements are attached to the base at oblique angles. This reduces mechanical stress and enables the elements to expand as they heat up during generator operation. They also have the added benefit of having no moving feet which means they don’t need maintenance and can’t get blocked which could cause the unit to fail. Insulation: Alstom’s leading insulation system, with high quality stator windings, strong mechanical fixing of both bars and the stator core, leads to long, trouble-free operation. Shaft lines: Alstom provides its customers with short and stiff shaft lines that reduce the height of the powerhouse and, as a consequence, the civil works required. They also improve mechanical behaviour which in turn increases performance.Alstom provides the full range of products and services for Kaplan power plants, including, turbines, generators, hydro mechanical equipment, control systems, balance of plant and services.RPW/BPROS/VRTKPL12/eng/HYD/03.12/FR/7565 © - ALSTOM 2012. Additionally, Alstom’s hydrostatic water guide bearings, oil-free hubs and self-lubricating bushings, avoid petroleum-based lubricants. An additional benefit of hydrostatic water guide bearings is that they double as shaft seals, eliminating the need for a separate shaft seal component.
