Oil Feed Pipes Brochure
Designed to be robust and long lasting, oil-fired appliancesare some of the most efficient you can get. There’s a hugechoice of floor standing or wall mounted boilers, most ofwhich are suitable for installation inside domestic premises.Condensing appliancesFrom 1st April 2008 in the Republic of Ireland, all new andreplacement oil boilers must have a minimum seasonalHARP efficiency of 86%. That means that high efficiencycondensing boilers must be used, regardless of whetheryou are installing a boiler in a new build property, orreplacing one in an existing dwelling.Condensing boilers are more efficient than traditionalboilers, using less fuel, reducing energy bills and carbonemissions at the same time. There are exceptions to this rule where it is not feasible orpractical to install a condensing boiler in an existingdwelling. In those cases, an assessment should be carriedout to determine whether an exemption is allowed.Guidance is available in a document called “Guide to theCondensing Boiler Installation Assessment Procedure forExisting Dwellings”, which is available atwww.environ.ie/en/tgd/Newbuild propertiesAppliances must meet the minimum HARP efficiency in thenew build specification which has been determined byeither the builder, developer, architect or consultant. Novariation should take place without prior consultation andagreement with the speficier. The building regulations are designed to encourage energyconservation in new build, including fully pumped systemswith dedicated time and temperature control, and full boilerinterlock and zones.New build properties should also comply with a MaximumPermitted Carbon Dioxide Emission Rate (MPCDER). Theactual Carbon Dioxide Emission Rate (CDER) of a propertymust not exceed the MPCDER which is calculated using theDwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP).These are all measures designed to promote energyefficiency, whilst lowering carbon dioxide emissions.SystemcontrolsAccurate system controls and correct installation can savemoney by reducing heat wastage. For example, byreducing room temperature by 1°C, consumers can save upto 10% off their annual fuel bill. From 1st July 2008, all new systems installed in both newand existing dwellings in the republic of Ireland mustincorporate the following:• Full boiler controls, interlock, zones and cylinderthermostat• Maximum heating zone of 100m2• Independent time controls for both central heating anddomestic hot wateroil fired appliancesTheOFTECeasy guide to...• All appliances and systems must be fully commissionedaccording to the manufacturer’s instructions• The customer must be supplied with information onoperating and maintaining the system.Maintenance and safetyOil fired appliances must be serviced as per themanufacturers specification. Sufficient access space mustbe left for the service and maintenance of the appliance.OFTECOil Firing Technical AssociationFoxwood House, Dobbs Lane,Kesgrave, Ipswich IP5 2QQTel: 0845 65 85 080 Fax: 0845 65 85 181www.oftec.org PUB/45 Issue 2 11.11.2008
