Precision Measurement Engineering, Inc. (PME) Company Profile Brochure
Precision Measurement EngineeringCOMPANY PROFILEProviding sensors and systems for water monitoring and analysis. PRODUCTSLakeESP (Environmental Sensing Platform)Precision Measurement Engineering, Inc. has been providing the international community with high resolution water monitoring and analysis sensors and systems for over 25 years. Our sensors include microscale conductivity and temperature, dissolved oxygen, fluorometery, PAR, temperature and pres-sure. PME products are used world wide and take more than a million temperature measurements daily. PME’s sensors and systems are used in lakes, reservoirs, rivers, oceans and estuaries. The LakeESP is a complete system for long-term water quality monitoring and management. The instrument features real-time monitoring of the water column temperature stratification, dissolved oxygen, depth and PAR. Above surface sensors include wind speed & direction, net and short wave radiation, humidity, air temperature, liquid precipitation and barometric pressure. The system can transmit data via GSM cell phone or other methods to a user specified destination. Mea-surements are typically collected once per minute, but can be collected as often as once every few seconds, depending upon customer specification. The LakeESP is a stationary floating system that can be easily installed and is moored to compensate for fluctuating water levels. Applications• Monitor real-time lake parameters such as - temperature stratification - oxygen concentration - wind speed & direction - solar radiation - air temperature & relative humidity• Validate lake models • Compute Lake NumberT-Chain Monitor Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, Pressure and PAR in lakes, rivers, oceans, estuaries, and reservoirs. The T-Chain is used as a water quality monitoring and lake management device that collects water column tempera-ture, dissolved oxygen, PAR and pressure measurements. T-Chains are currently being used to monitor thermoclines, dissolved oxygen fluctuations, internal waves, plumes, up-welling and eddies, lake turnover, data under ice, and more. The T-Chain is also a part of the LakeESP. The T-Chain is designed to collect measurements as rap-idly as once per second. Sensor locations on the cable are specified by the customer. The T-Chain can be supplied with a PME underwater log-ger, or with a RS 232/ 485 connection. T-Chains can also be used with Campbell Scientific data loggers. Applications• Monitor water column temperature• Monitor dissolved oxygen content• Detect Plumes (towing the T-Chain)• Collect data on Fall and Spring turnover• Detect internal waves• Collect data for computing Vertical Eddy Diffusivity• Validate models • Collect temperature and oxygen data under iceSCAMP MSCTI The Self Contained Autonomous MicroProfiler (SCAMP) is a portable, lightweight microstructure profiler designed to mea-sure extremely small scale (order 1 mm) fluctuations of electrical conductivity, temperature, and chlorophyll concentration in lakes, reservoirs, estuaries and oceans. These data can be used to infer the levels of dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy, in-situ fluxes of heat and salt, and the microstructure behavior of these parameters. Applications• Turbulence mixing in surface layers• Collecting profile temperature-gradient• Vertical turbulent diffusivity• Mixing in the upper layer from wind and coolingThe Model 125MicroScale Conductivity and Temperature Instrument (MSCTI) is designed to mea-sure the electrical conductivity and temperature of solutions containing conductive ions. This instru-ment provides two analog voltage outputs, one linearly propotional to the solution conductivity, and one non-linearly proportional to the solution temperature. Special emphasis is placed on making rapid, small spatial resolution measurements of both parameters in laboratory situations.Applications• Turbulent density and temperature variations in salt-stratified water flows• Turbulent salinity flux• Determine density profilesFast CT Sensor, Nortek Velocimeter The Fast Conductivity and Temperature sen-sor has been modified to be integrated with a Nortek Velocimeter. PME is able to proide a sensor addition, cable connection, and bracket for the Nortek Velocimeter. This combined unit is used to study turbulent mixing and vertical transport near the sedi-ment in a body of water. PROJECTSThe Coastal Observing Research Development Center at Scripps Institu-tion of Oceanography maintains a PME T-Chain at their research pier as part of an ocean observing program. The data are contributing to research on coastal temperature changes on both short and long term time scales. The temperature chain consists of fast response thermistor nodes spaced one meter apart and a bottom mounted pressure sensor for measuring wave height. It is cabled to a pier based com-puter and data is sent real-time to the web for public display.T-Chain on Scripps PierSCAMP used to Monitor MixingThe University of Amsterdam’s Re-search Group of Aquatic Microbiol-ogy (AMB) used SCAMP during the summer months of 2007 to study harmful cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Nieuwe Meer, Netherlands. An artificial mixerSCAMP was used to monitor the vertical turbulent diffu-sivity. Harmful cyanobacteria blooms dur-ing summer months when there is low wind speed and reduced cloudi-ness. High temperatures can form in the lake and create perfect condi-tions for a destructive bloom.
