Description S50 is a bioester derived from natural oils which is compatible with diesel / FAME blends. S50 is structurally similar to FAME. It is composed of natural free fatty acids identical to the ones found in FAME. The only chemical difference is that S50 contains a glycerol monoalcohol instead of methanol. Reaction: First step: Glycerol + Formaldehyde ? Glycerol formal + Water Second step: Glycerol formal + Biodiesel ? S50 + Methanol Development phase S50 is in the late stages of development phase. Engine tests as well as industrial scale-up development are now being conducted. 2 Intellectual Property status Spanish application P200601918 on July 13th, 2006. PCT/EP2007/057123 July 11th, 2007. European Patent application 07787394.1 with patent number 2049623 on February 10th, 2009. Patent granted on May 25th, 2011 with caducity date on July 11th, 2027 and European publication number 2049623. Along 2009 S50 has entered in national phases in: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Hong-Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. Patent granted in the European Union, Mexico, Malaysia and New Zealand (2011). Patent granted in the USA (2012) Uses As biofuel component of diesel/biodiesel fuel blends. As additive: mixable with conventional diesel and biodiesel. As heating oil: in boilers. Advantages - According to our estimations, S50 increases 10-25% the operative profit of a biodiesel manufacturing plant, depending on the kind of oil used as raw material. - It allows transforming 100% of by-product glycerol into a new biofuel component. - The required investment to produce S50 is low because the facilities and equipment already installed to produce biodiesel can be shared or modified at low cost. Moreover, the starting material is already available in the biodiesel plant or can be easily found. - S50 carbon residue is less, only 0.07 g/g, than of diesel and biodiesel (both 0.3). - S50 has better cetane number (58.9) than biodiesel (56.5) and diesel (51.0). - Environment advantages: it is needed 20% less oil to get the same quantity of equivalent biocombustible. - CO2 emission reduction: 36% decrease in the CO2 emissions from non renewable origin compared to biodiesel. - The biofuel obtained from glycerol benefit of CO2 credits: with S50 there is a 91% emission global reduction of CO2 compared to the reduction of biodiesel emissions of 85%.
