What is today Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals, Inc., began in 1924 when Fred Ulbrich, Sr. started a scrap metal reselling business in Wallingford, Connecticut. Fred, Sr. soon began manufacturing cutlery, and during World War II was awarded a contract to supply stainless steel knives for the U.S. Army’s mess kits. This contract allowed the company to purchase its first rolling mill, which was instrumental in transforming Ulbrich from a utensils-based manufacturer to a custom stainless steel strip operation in the post-World War II era.

Today, Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals, Inc. is a fourth-generation family owned and operated business with 11 locations in five countries. CEO Chris Ulbrich, son of the late Fred Ulbrich, Jr., now leads a global workforce of over 700 employees who still hold true the values in which the company was founded on in 1924: a never-ending commitment to quality, innovation and customer service.
Ulbrich Specialty Wire Products (USWP) was formed in 2001, when Ulbrich acquired the Wire Division of Steel Heddle. Based in Westminster, SC USA, the company was an early pioneer in wires for photovoltaics, producing its first PV ribbons in 1992. Today, USWP has 155 employees, more than 20 of whom are Materials Scientists, Engineers or Technicians. This strong technical foundation, coupled with decades of know-how, and specialized processing capabilities, enables USWP to develop and supply wires for a number of demanding & critical applications. These include Medical Devices, Aerospace, High-end Microwave & Data Cables, Electromobility, as well as Photovoltaics.

Ulbrich of Austria was founded in 2007 to supply the European Solar Industry. Over the last decade the Austrian team transformed from a highly automated standard ribbon supplier to a specialist in niche crystalline technologies. With the introduction of power enhancing and special ribbon products Ulbrich of Austria is supplying state of the art module fabs all over the world. Over 55 employees are continuously working together with our customers to improve photovoltaic power generation and bring it to the next level.
