ASLO 2021 Aquatic Sciences Meeting
Aquatic Sciences for a Sustainable Future: Nurturing Cooperation.Following the pressing needs of the society to ensure a sustainable future, amidst human-influenced environmental changes, the theme of the meeting is Aquatic Sciences for a Sustainable Future: Nurturing Cooperation. Underdeveloped and developed societies face different levels of sustainability problems in aquatic resources and have contrasting capacities to address and adapt to upcoming changes and threats, which makes cooperation paramount for an efficient and increasing exchange of information to find long-term sustainable solutions. Dialogue among scientists, as well as transfer of knowledge for the benefit of the society, are very important in addressing sustainability challenges.
To provide a venue for this exchange, we will incorporate the theme into the plenary sessions: The future of seafood resources and the role of cooperation; Restoration of aquatic ecosystems, in line with the United Nations Decade of Restoration; Carbon dynamics in lakes and rivers; Past and future of ocean circulation and its role for the climate system; Linking the health of the oceans to humans; Remote sensing and large scale detection; Integrated management of aquatic resources.
Initially this meeting was scheduled to be held in Palma, but due to COVID-19, it is necessary to hold the ASLO 2021 Aquatic Sciences Meeting virtually. However, we plan to meet in Palma in 2023. We will embrace dialogue in the virtual realm, concentrating on cooperation in an electronic environment.
We look forward to having a dynamic meeting. The ASLO 2021 Aquatic Sciences Meeting was originally scheduled to begin in late February. Due to COVID-19, the date had to be rescheduled to June. ASLO meetings normally begin on Sunday with an opening plenary and reception, then conclude on Friday – with the scientific program scheduled Monday through Friday. Due to the revised 2021 dates, the Sunday through Friday pattern had to be changed with the scientific program scheduled Wednesday through Sunday. Because the meeting will be virtual, some of the activities may be outside of these dates.
ASLO joins the world in adjusting to a new normal. This includes providing a format that best serves ASLO and the aquatic sciences community. We continue working on a state-of-the-art platform and look forward to introducing a fresh format for ASM 2021.
The 2021 Aquatic Sciences Meeting has been organized to engender as much interaction as possible.
Program Structure:
The meeting will be organized on UTC time to reflect the European origin of the meeting.
The scientific program will run from 10:00 to 17:00 UTC with award talks at 17:00 and plenary talks at 18:00. Workshops, town halls, meetings and social events will take place after the scientific program each day and also on Tuesday the 22nd and Monday the 28th. This schedule is subject to change.

Oral Format:
Oral sessions will follow a new format designed to encourage discussion amongst participants in a virtual setting. Sessions will be organized in one-hour blocks, where each presenter (of six) will gave a short five-minute talk on their research. The remaining 30 minutes will be dedicated to discussion. The audience for each session will be prompted to watch the full, pre-uploaded presentations before the session occurs. Both the prerecorded presentations and a recording of the one-hour session will be available to attendees throughout the meeting.

Are you signed up for the Meeting Mentor program as a mentee or mentor? Bring a time-zone appropriate beverage and join us to meet and connect with other mentees and mentors. This informal gathering will help you attach faces to names; get to know fellow students, early career scientists, or mentors; and receive guidance on navigating the meeting. Break out "rooms" will be available for deeper discussions if desired.
Interactive Mentoring Workshop - Tips and Tricks to Help You Thrive as an Early Career Researcher (ECR)Tuesday, 6/22/2021, 13:00-14:30 (GMT Daylight Time), Room 5
Organizer: Mina Bizic (mbizic@igb-berlin.de)
“Mentoring is the light that shines on the path to success.”
As a researcher in your early career, you face a lot of situations that are new or difficult to handle. In parallel to the ASLO`s meeting-mentoring program, this workshop aims to address important umbrella aspects hovering above the research activity of early-career scientists. These topics should be a routine part of a mentor - mentee tandem. Whether you are lucky or not to have a mentor, someone you trust and can approach any time for support and advice, joining this workshop will give you the opportunity to hear advice, perhaps alternative, on a topic of your interest, from another leading, experienced researcher.
In this 90-minute workshop, after a short 15-minute introduction on the concepts and roles of mentors and mentees, we will split up into 45-minute breakout rooms where, in small groups, experienced mentors will discuss and answer questions on the following topics:
- Proposal writing
- Fostering EDI (equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging) environments
- Networking (tricks and tips on how to make and keep contacts in the scientific community)
- How to keep open communication with group members/colleagues
- Mistakes to avoid when starting a position in a new working group
- Conflict resolution/management
- Mental health in the stressful scientific surroundings
- Resource navigation/management
- Pandemic-driven adaptations towards a virtual world
- How to avoid the spam folder when contacting a PI for the first time
- Professional challenges (when the rules of the game suddenly change, i.e. Covid)
- How to prepare for parental leave and minimize the forming gap
- Reviewer and editorial activities
- Other: Please specify in one sentence during registration your additional interests
The workshop will conclude with the main highlight from each discussion group so we all can benefit from the topics we could not attend.
If you are an ECR, and would like to take part in our Interactive Mentoring Workshop, please REGISTER HERE (ECR Form)
If you are an established group leader and would like to join our Interactive Mentoring Workshop as a MENTOR to contribute to 45-minute lively discussions in small groups, please REGISTER HERE (MENTOR Form)
In case of any trouble with the registration, please contact Mina Bizic (mbizic@igb-berlin.de)
The registration will close on Sunday, June 6th, 2021 at 11:59pm (GMT/UTC, Palma, Spain)
The EC Committee is looking forward to seeing many of you participating in our Interactive Mentoring Workshop - Tips and Tricks to Help You Thrive as an Early Career Researcher (ECR) and contributing to lively discussions in the breakout rooms.
As a leader in aquatic science, ASLO 2021 presents another first for exhibitors with the virtual conference platform. Streamlining the meeting experience for attendees, this arena for exhibitors includes exciting opportunities.
More so than in past years, ASLO 2021 is global in nature and we welcome commercial, non-profit, and government exhibitors to participate. This year’s virtual platform expands exhibitor experiences, providing:
Exhibitor Gallery
- Dedicated micro-page for each exhibitor
- Ability to showcase: Logo,Organization Description, Calendar link, Handouts/downloads, Social connections, Commercial Video and more.
Exhibitors will have dedicated virtual locations to publish information and interact with attendees. Information may include downloadable material, videos, and contact information. The combination of an easy-to-navigate gallery and portal are the foundation of how exhibitors interact with attendees, creating relevant networking opportunities.
