Did you know that pellet stoves are considered to be the best choice for heating system in the south of europe?

During 2013, around half a million pellet stoves were sold in the European Union, over half of them in Italy. In France around 94,000 stoves were installed, and another 28,600 were sold in Spain.

The South of Europe is the main market for stoves as they require an average affordable investment of around €1,000 – and they generate heat at a cost of between 30% and 70% that of fossil fuels or electricity.

Consumers prefer to switch to biomass: it’s cheaper, more stable and local. Aesthetically, stoves offer users design and warmth and they are improving technically all the time. Expectations are very high, fundamentally because savings continue to be vital when it comes to buying biomass equipment and, furthermore, competition among manufacturers is contributing to their becoming more technical, offering equipment with a tenth of the particle emissions of old-fashioned conventional wood burners.

Pellet Sales Increase Stable And Sustainable Way

Domestic pellet consumption in Spain has gone from 150,000 tonnes per annum in 2011 to 450,000 tonnes per annum last year, and it is estimated that it will exceed 1,150,000 tonnes of pellets in 2020.

Spanish production guarantees supply and is steadily growing. Spain’s production capacity already exceeds 950,000 tonnes per annum although the country only manufactures around 410,000 tonnes, of which some 70,000 tonnes are exported to France and Italy, while 110,000 tonnes of Portuguese pellets are imported to meet national demand.

ENPlus pellet certification is strengthened as the reference for consumers. The expectations of AEBIOM are for a European domestic pellet market that will double between now and 2020, to go from 10 to 20 million tons being consumed. Spanish producer companies have not missed the boat this time: 19 manufacturers and 10 traders strive every day to maintain ENplus pellet quality parameters, and we are increasing the monitoring and inspection levels in order to guarantee quality for consumers.

Fully Exploiting All The Biomass Coming From The Land

The demand for timber in Europe will grow by around 40% over the coming decades, and Spain has a long way to go because the country only uses a third of what its countryside produces for biomass or other timber products.

Likewise, consumption of pellets in Spain has grown greatly over the last few years; going from 80,000 tonnes in 2010 to 450,000 tonnes in 2014, and is set to exceed a million tonnes in five years’ time.

It is estimated that around a million tonnes of chip and other non-pelleted forestry products (branches, stumps, etc.) are used for energy in Spain. In 2014 Spain had 16 Biomass Logistics Centres supplying around 200,000 tonnes of chips for thermal use in industries, ESEs and other large-scale consumers such as schools and hospitals; and they, together with dozens of forestry enterprises, had the job of supplying over 400 MW of installed electricity generation in Spain, in addition to exporting over 150,000 tonnes of chips for European electricity plants. Chip consumption is in full growth and it is worth noting that another 200MW of electricity generation from biomass could be implemented over the coming years.

Thousands Of Construction And Rehabilitation Projects Save Money To Their Owners
Expobiomasa is an inescapable diary date for developers, designers, architects and interior designers, builders, restoration companies, estate managers and large-scale energy users.

It is a chance for them to integrate biomass into the markets for building and restoration by making the most of:

  • The advantages of savings, financing and maintenance to be found when users and professionals hire Energy Service Enterprises (ESEs).
  • Current legislation, which includes biomass installations as a form of restoration and energy efficiency in housing.
  • Biomass for hot water and heating is one of the most appealing solutions for substantially improving Home Energy Ratings, with shorter return times than any of the passive measures such as insulation or window replacement.
  • In residential buildings, heat demand for hot water and heating comes to around 66% of all the energy consumed under normal habitable conditions of use. Buildings that get their energy from fossil fuels obtain a lower rating because they are penalised for their high CO2 emissions. Renewable energies, like biomass, are not included in CO2 calculations or non-renewable primary energy consumption, which means buildings with low ratings can see them greatly improved if new biomass boilers are installed.

Savings and employment in the municipalities.
Schools, residences, town halls, district heating systems, municipal sports centres, hospitals, public swimming pools,… these are some of the buildings that have caught on to the advantages of biomass over the past two years to increase by 70% the number of public installations using biomass to generate the heating and hot water they need.

Biomass is a local, manageable, renewable energy source that is much cheaper than fossil fuels, making it possible to make savings of over 40% compared to them.

Biomass generates jobs locally because it comes from sustainable use of local woodland by using a district’s own resources. A district with a population of 10,000 generates 10 jobs if natural gas is used for heating, whereas using biomass generates 130 local jobs.

Expobiomasa has already been the meeting point for over 1,000 local decision-makers, mayors and local corporation members; provincial technicians and department heads; rural development groups; or any municipal chief that has switched to biomass to improve the quality of life for the people in their locality.

Savings of over 50% in energy bills for the food and farming industry.
The farming and food industries that are switching to biomass more quickly are farms, greenhouses, dryers and dehydrators such as tobacco companies, feed manufacturers, oil mills, bakeries, producers of dairy, meat and tinned produce, wineries, fungi producers and dried fruit and nut producers.

Energy consumption is a key factor for farming and food enterprises and biomass offers some advantages:

  • Financing and service outsourcing with ESEs
  • Improvement in energy efficiency
  • Valued use of by-products and waste for their own energy, saving in purchases of oil, gas or electricity
  • A corporate image of respect for the environment (CO2 emissions reduction, reducing waste, being more sustainable, etc.)

Biomass is the renewable energy that convinces hotel and restaurant owners.

  • The lower and more stable price of biofuels.

Improved corporate image through the use of renewable energies, which responds to growing public awareness of environmental protection and job creation in the areas where companies develop their activity.

It is not just large companies, corporations and hotels that have switched to biomass. Thousands of small to medium-sized enterprises running rural guesthouses, bars, restaurants, residencies,… are more attractive and welcoming to their customers when they use biomass.

Biomass Allows To Control Costs At Industrial Sector
In most enterprises we have to control running costs thoroughly in order to develop our activity. In addition to the cost of air-conditioning, some industries need heat to carry out their processes: steam, ovens, oils, etc. And this cost is usually high and unstable if fossil fuels such as gas or oil are used.
