Austin Chamber of Commerce selects Flare Industries as the winner of the medium business export award
Austin, TX -- The Austin Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with GlobalAustin, the City of Austin, and the State of Texas, is pleased to announce the winners of the Second Annual International Awards that took place May 3, 2012 at the Four Seasons Hotel Austin. State and local officials, business leaders, and educational institutions gathered to recognize members of the Texas Consular Corps and high other high ranking officials representing countries including Mexico, Germany, the Netherlands, Korea, India, and Spain among others. The program included remarks from Mayor Lee Leffingwell; Deputy Secretary of State Coby Shorter, III; and Ambassador Karen Hughes.
The award for Top Foreign Direct Investment went to BAE Systems, a global provider of defense and security products. Employing around 100,000 people worldwide, BAE Systems has been a part of the Austin business landscape for over 50 years. In 2011, BAE announced a significant expansion to its existing Austin footprint with a state-of-the art manufacturing center. The new facility will produce an array of technologies for the global defense, aerospace, and security companies Electronic Systems sector. BAE is currently housed in a 500,000 square foot facility which includes 90,000 square feet of manufacturing and has 550 employees. This $20 million expansion is planned to create an additional 200 jobs. This new “manufacturing center of excellence” is another milestone in the company’s history of delivering innovative solutions in support of our strong national defense.
Companies presented with Austin International Awards were as follows:
- Small Business Export Award: Lafes Natural Bodycare, creating healthy, all-natural body care products with high quality ingredients
- Medium Business Export Award: Flare Industries, an industry leader in combustion and pollution control technology
- Large Business Export Award: Freescale Semiconductor, a global leader in embedded processing solutions to advance the automotive, consumer, industrial and networking markets
- Export Service Provider Award: Hulsey P.C. – Intellectual Property Lawyers, working to protect the innovations of their clients in this entrepreneurial age
The top direct foreign investment company was identified by the Austin Chamber of Commerce. The export awards were selected by the Austin U.S. Export Assistance Center. Nominees were evaluated by the leadership of the Texas Camino Real District Export Council using a scoring system to determine which of these export manufacturing companies had made significant advances in penetrating international markets and had a high percentage of sales growth due to exporting. For the service companies, they were evaluated on how they have helped prepare U.S. companies for foreign markets.
This annual event highlights and promotes the importance of international trade to the Austin metropolitan area economy and memorializes Austin international activities during World Trade Month – an annual nationwide celebration of international trade.
