Swedish wave energy innovator CorPower Ocean has secured a berth agreement to install a 5-MW wave energy project at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, poised to become the UK’s largest wave energy array. Set for deployment in 2029 at EMEC’s grid-connected Billia Croo test site, the initiative will feature 14 wave energy converters (WECs) designed to operate for up to 15 years.
The announcement was made by Scotland’s Deputy First Minister, Kate Forbes, during the All-Energy Conference in Glasgow. The project is actively seeking government support, with CorPower’s Head of Business Development, Anders Jansson, emphasizing the importance of the UK’s renewable auctions as a vital pathway to market. The Marine Energy Council (MEC) is urging the government to include its first wave energy project in this year’s auction, either through a dedicated GBP 5 million wave energy fund or by establishing a clear capacity target supported by alternative mechanisms.
This marks CorPower’s second venture at EMEC, following the successful 2018 trial of its C3 WEC. The company has also showcased its C4 device off Portugal’s coast, withstanding storm waves exceeding 18 meters while delivering electricity to the grid. Prior to the full-scale 5-MW project, CorPower plans to deploy three additional WECs to establish a small-scale wave farm demonstration.
