Eaton connecting utility customers to the power of the sun with expanded product portfolio at Solar Power International 2012
PITTSBURGH -- Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation is making reliable solar generation a reality for utility customers with new products engineered to safely and efficiently maximize solar harvest and enhance grid connection. The new solutions will be on display from Sept. 10 -13, 2012, at Solar Power International, in booth #3701, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.
Eaton leverages 100 years of electrical distribution system experience and innovation to provide strategic coordination of all the electrical equipment, design, installation and maintenance services required to install a utility-scale solar power system.
“Commercial-scale solar solutions are often modified to fit utility-scale applications, adding installation time and equipment costs while reducing reliability and safety,” said John Vernacchia, manager, Renewable Energy Segment, Eaton. “ Eaton offers equipment specifically engineered for large-scale installations and a team of engineers that bring extensive skills and expertise to power system analysis and design.”
Eaton’s new solutions include: the Power Xpert Solar™ megawatt (MW) scale inverter, the world’s largest PV inverter specifically designed for utility applications; the Eaton PVGard™, the first molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) specifically designed for photovoltaic (PV) systems; and the industry’s first bi-directional safety switches, which are available for either grounded or ungrounded PV applications and are engineered to break potentially dangerous, high-energy arcs regardless of current flow direction.
The new solutions further position Eaton as an industry-leading single-source provider of balance-of-system (BOS) and energy management solutions designed to meet the challenges of residential, commercial, institutional and utility solar installations.
Eaton recently supplied the New Mexico VA Health Care System with $20 million in turn-key electrical products and services for the installation and design of a 3.2 MW PV system. Eaton has also provided $8.1 million in electrical power distribution system equipment, and engineering and consulting services to the 280 MW Solana Generating Station in Arizona, which will be one of the largest solar power plants in the world upon completion in 2013.
As part of Eaton’s participation in Solar Power International 2012, Vince Scaini, product manager, Eaton, will participate in an energy storage panel discussion on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Scaini will present information on Eaton’s utility-scale applications as well as grid connectivity and inverter technology. The panel will emphasize the technical and economic developments in the value of energy storage – and back-up – for the utility and end-customer.
With solutions including DC switching and protection, solar inverters, AC switching and protection, and a team of experienced engineers, Eaton builds solar systems tailored to customer requirements and provides the skills needed to successfully complete a project, from initial site assessment through post-installation measurement and verification and maintenance.
